ELECTRO (music)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Electro (also known as electro funk) is an electronic style of hip hop directly influenced by Kraftwerk and funk records (unlike earlier rap records that were closer to disco). Records in the genre are unabashed about their use of electronic and artificial sounds, taking this technological fetish almost into science fiction with many records about space travel and futuristic dystopias.
Listed below is a list of many well known modern electro artists:
* ADULT.
* Anthony Rother
* Arpanet
* Aux88
* Bass Junkie
* Computer Rockers
* Cyberian Knights
Cyberian Knights Recordings was started in 2002 by Scott Weiser (Jackal & Hyde / Dynamix II / IBM) & J-Break as a collaborative effort to bring upfront electro to the masses. Their goal was to make the Cyberian Knights to electro what the Metalheadz are to Drum & Bass.
The first EP "This Is The Sound of Underground" became a instant classic when it dropped in March of 2003, becoming one of the most played songs of the year. It was featured as the opening tracks on Wutam & J-Break's debut mix CD compilation, "Biomechanik" on Subculture Records as well as Baby Anne's "Mixed Live: Las Vegas (Club Ra)" mix CD compilation. The song also appeared on television and radio ads for Mtv, Club La Vela and on cable television music channels as well.
The second EP featured some older industrial electro classics by IBM from two previous EPs from 1996 and 1998. The best tracks made it to the EP including "Devastate The Planet" which was featured on J-Break's "Barcelona, Spain" mix compilation on Afterdark Records. Pressed on clear vinyl, this EP was a limited edition release with only 1000 units pressed for the true diehard fans of IBM.
The third EP is a joint effort with 2 older tracks by IBM, "Invisible Force" and "Voice of World Control" combined by 2 newer tracks by Miami's own Ashrock. Ashrock has received critical acclaim for his hardcore electro EPs with partner, Jimi The Genius, as "Hydraulix" on legendary labels such as Touchin Bass (UK), Monotone (USA), and their Kuad label. Wutam & J-Break's remix of Ashrock's "Bodyrock" also appears on the EP as well.

I.B.M vs. Ash Rock Cyberian Knights Recordings 008
If you missed the previous CKR output, please note that the release offered a republication of legendary "Devastate The Planet", "I.B.M" and "Stampede Robot" cuts taken from two EP's published one on Battle Trax in 1997, the other on Joey Boy in 1998. Founded in Miami in 2002 by Scott Weiser and JBreak, the label continues on its impetus with its second production, in the form of a two heads 12". A side sees again Industrial Bass Machine, the mythical band made up of Scott Weiser (Jackal & Hyde / Dynamix II) and Phil Klein (Battle Trax / Breakin) for two older titles resulting this time from "A Taste Of Armageddon EP": remasterized "Invisible Force" and "Voice Of World Control", enhanced for this last one with excellent bonus beat. Atmosphere is with the industrial electrocore marrying with the desire powerful bass line, vocoder and trancey strings. Still impressive. The other face invites Ash Rock, half of the American duo Hydraulix (Touchin' Bass / Kuad), for the dark unreleased "Body Rock" in a Miami Bass Electro style. If the original, already shining, remains minimal, the remix signed Wutam and JBreak offers an amazing version, combining with talent depressive layers, metallic sonorities and chopped beats. A focused on the dancefloor essential production, turned at the same time towards the past and the future!

Electro has undergone several deviations since the dawn of Kraftwerk's cold pulse, from the "Planet Rock" of Afrika Bambaataa to synth-pop to recent electroclash nostalgia. One of its more underrated offshoots is Florida's indelible electro-breaks scene, which owes an equal debt to roller-skating booty-tech and German industrial beats.
At the forefront of that movement, West Palm Beach-based Cyberian Knights has been an emerging force in this movement, as a label and as a collective. "Scott Weiser and I started Cyberian Knights Recordings in 2002," co-founder Jason Metsala explains, "shortly after our first release under that collective name on my label, Millennium Breaks."
The CK imprint includes work from Sunshine State vets like Miami's Dynamix II and Tampa's Jackal and Hyde, along with up-and-comers like Orlando's DJ Wutam. With several releases, remixes, and underground thumpers like Ashrock's "Body Rock" already behind them, CK will always be a joint effort, according to Metsala. "We'll feature multiple artists from the CK collective on every 12-inch and CD release we do," he says. "Our goal is to make Cyberian Knights to electro what Metalheadz are to drum 'n' bass." Two new albums and a three-month, 30-city tour, including multiple appearances at the Winter Music Conference, might assure that goal.
Cyberian Knights artists are all over the Winter Music Conference, starting Tuesday, March 22, with J-Break and 15 other regional and international artists at Spy Lounge, 227 Ninth St., Miami Beach. Tickets cost $20; Dynamix II, Infiniti, Wutam & J-Break, Ashrock, and Agent K play a daytime set Thursday, March 24, at Break Fest II at Nocturnal, 50 NE 11th St., Miami, and that night at Rivir, 66 SW Sixth St., Miami. On Friday, March 25, Dynamix II vs. Jackal & Hyde, and Ashrock play the Ultra Music Fest. See the Winter Music Conference insert for details, or visit www.myspace.com/cyberianknightsrecordings.

This month's theme: songs inspired by old-school electro. Not exactly a radical departure for me, I know! But each of these cuts displays its electro DNA in a unique way.
Cyberian Knights - "This Is the Sound of Underground" - A fine homage to the classics, with an addictive refrain. The deep bass, ticking percussion, and evil-robot vox take me back to a South Florida skating rink circa 1983, but the production is polished and contemporary. It looks like this track is currently out of print, but you can find out more about the Cyberian Knights electro collective here and here. (Thanks to Giles for turning me on to this!)
