September 2006
Thage stares at Boogie B’s mud stained jeans and Boogie B stares back at Thage’s black, tired eyes. It was half a year since they even considered hanging out in the same room – a half a year ago there was only hate. If the two rappers hadn’t, by sheer coincidence, ended up at the same party tonight, it would most probably have remained that way.
Boogie B and Mr. Linus are since four months back employed at the local graveyard, digging dark, deep holes daytime and stealing funeral food and wine nighttime. They no longer care about music or Speech Defect. Thage and Prao-D have also gone their separate ways. Thage had hardly left his apartment before tonight’s party, and Prao-D works manically on his manuscript, loosely based on the life of his relatives, acrobats of the Russian circus.
But this night everything changes, ironically to the tones of David Bowie’s “Changesâ€. As the song starts playing, the two rappers catch each other crying their hearts out on the very same line. And they look at each other. And start to laugh.
How the fuck did we end up here?
Six months earlier
There is a fork stuck down firmly into the sampler. The room is empty –Speech Defect no longer exists. But there wasn’t any big argument that led up to this. Just a feeling of something lost. And hopelessness. So as Prao-D refuses to move a hi-hat while programming the drums for Superfuture, Boogie B simply throws his pizza on the floor, shoves his fork into the SP 1200 and leaves the room. The Prao-D leaves. After a while, so do Mr. Linus and Thage.
But time went by. And there was the party. And there was David Bowie. And Speech Defect once again goes back into the studio.
Today!
“Come For Da Funeral, Stay For Da Food†is out. A record built solely on Speech Defect’s experiences during their time apart. Mr. Linus and Boogie B can’t let go of the memories of dark graves, food and the sweet funeral wine. Thage has, in between black cups of coffee in the kitchen, ranked his favorite colors and found new ways of rhyming. Prao-D leaves his circus project and starts making beats with the same wild obsession. The album turns out to be deeply sick. And hard as hell.
Speech Defect recently toured Japan and the US, the first tour since the earlier tours in Europe. “Come For Da Funeral, Stay For Da Food†is out in Japan and Australia.
