DAVE PHILP & THE AUTOMATICS......
Dave Philp is best known for his role as the lead singer and songwriter of UK Punk/Powerpop band The Automatics, whose 'When the tanks roll over Poland again' became one of the Punk era`s best loved anthems. More recently Dave`s Automatics have recorded 2 highly acclaimed albums ( Automatics '2' in 2001, and "Forty Virgins in the Afterlife" 2003) and have played several tours of Japan.
Dave has now completed work on the brand new Automatics album 'Britannia', a labour of love which has been 2 years in the making and the album is provisionally set for a UK release in June 2006, on the newly resurrected vintage Pop/Punk label Dork Records. In a departure from the usual 'full on' sound of The Automatics, 'Britannia' is an evocative collection songs with a common English theme. From out and out Powerpop to wistful acoustic ballads this album allows Dave Philp to demonstrate the full scope of his songwriting and creative abilities, and a first rate assemblage of musical friends have worked hard to create the album`s distinctive sound.
The main musicians involved in the project include guitarist Ian McCallum (of Stiff little Fingers and ex Lindisfarne), Tommy Dwyer on drums and respected producer Jim Wirt on bass guitar, backing vocals and production duties. Guest musicians include Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), Michael Des Barres (ex Power Station),Mike Rossi (Slaughter & the dogs),Phil Hendriks (The Stiffs). There`s even a cameo appearance by Lancashire`s own Haslingden and Helmshore Brass Band. Now there aren`t too many albums where you`ll find a Sex Pistol and a Brass Band linking musical arms !!
If you're a fan of great melodies, harmonies and guitar based Pop Rock music (with the occasional hint of Folk) then we think you`ll love the new album.
Former BBC deejay Mike Read has been championing the Automatics "Britannia" album throughout the Summer on Big L Radio (formerly Radio London). Mike even cites the song "Old River Thames" as one of his 'Desert Island Discs'.....Big thank you for that Mike!!! Dave Philp has subsequently been in the UK during August 2006 touring the coastal resorts with Read`s Big L Radio roadshow to promote the album.Have a listen to The Big L, they play a tremendous selection and variety of music and they DO actually play your requests within minutes!!!Sky digital 0190 or MW 1395
