Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley, and Jason Baldwin:
These three men (also known as the West Memphis Three) are simply amazing. Their lives were taken away from them before they had the opportunity to really begin living. They are all in prison for a crime that they did not commit, and Damien is on death row. Somehow they have managed to stay positive for more than a decade and look toward a brighter future that will hopefully hold their freedom. Their unwavering strength and courage is nothing short of heroic.
Matthew Shepard
Matthew would not have considered himself a hero. All he actually did was stay true to himself. He was openly gay in a conservative community, and he was savagely beaten and left to die in the middle of a field for that reason alone. For Matthew Shepard, every day presented a new challenge, and what made him a hero was his unrelenting ability to face each day with a positive attitude. His death serves as a shouting reminder that homophobia and related hate crimes are not a thing of the past.
Johnny Depp and Jared Leto
I don’t really think that these two men are heroes in the traditional sense but I have a lot of respect for them. They are both amazingly talented, beautiful people. Jared is one of the most intriguing people that I have ever met. Their attitudes toward their lives and careers is rare, to say the least. Both of these men do what makes them happy without worrying about how the decisions will affect their images or reputations. They don’t take shit from anyone, and they don’t waste their time sugarcoating their opinions to make them socially acceptable. While this may not be heroic, it definitely commands respect and I admire them for their courage, even if this courage comes from an ‘I-don’t-give-a-fuck’ mind-set.
