Sounds Like: Last night I stumbled upon one of those "featured band" things on
MySpace; you know, those annoying promos on the front page leading up to
a band's new release that usually feature some shit screamo-core band.
The blurb for the band Emanuel noted that Terry Date produced their new
album Black Earth Tiger, which is out next week on Vagrant and is now
available for streaming in its entirety on the band's MySpace page.
Naturally I'm interested in anything Terry Date does; after all the
guy's record is impeccable (5 Pantera records, White Zombie, Deftones,
Soundgarden, Incubus, Fishbone, Machine Head, etc etc etc. We will
overlook Limp Bizkit for now). So I clicked on through. After listening to the first song "Cottonmouth" (after an
instrumental intro first track), I then proceeded to listen to the
ENTIRE album. It's that good. The band lists all the right influences:
Deftones, Quicksand, At the Drive In, Refused, Alice in Chains, STP,
etc, and the music that ensues is exactly what you'd expect from a
band that looks up to that list. And Terry Date was precisely the right
choice — the record sounds amazing. Musically the band mixes
Helmet/Quicksand-like heavy as fuck guitar riffing with the
sound-of-punk-to-come fury of Refused. Vocally the singer sounds
something like Refused's frontman cum Chino Moreno. Throw in some Mars
Volta-esque swirly sound effects… man, you've got a recipe for kick
ass shit. I can't get enough. Go listen now.
