Victim
of Da Funk (Eagles vs Daft Punk) |
MP3 | Created July 2005 | Time: 4:31
A creative mix of a classic-rock staple, with more current musical
samples, it has "head bobbing" appeal. This mash-up uses: Eagles
"Victim of Love," Daft Punk "Da Funk," James Brown - "Funky Drummer,"
Jazzy Jeff/Fresh Prince - "Brand New Funk" and the usual medley
elements, including "Disco Inferno" from 50 Cent. Includes a
DJ-friendly breakdown. Spanning the globe with radio spins in England,
France, Germany, Australia and others, the track has had local radio
play from Party Ben on LIVE 105 as well as 92.7 Energy in San
Francisco. A popular download being played in ipods and podcasts.
What people are
saying In fact, this track got a nice review from the man behind the
mashuptown podcast. "You want a pumpin' Mashup to get you
ready for the weekend? Well look no further. DJ John serves up a
Mashtastic mix of Daft Punk and the Eagles "Victim of Love". If this
doesn't get your blood pumpin', then nothing will. Have a great
weekend my Peeps and major props to DJ John."

Parsons Project + We Used To Be Friends + Friends Medley
|
MP3
Created February 2005 | Time: 9:08
One
of my first productions, this track was originally designed to be
a set opener based on “Sirius†(Alan Parsons Project), but it morphed
into a remix of "We Used To Be Friends" (Dandy Warhols).
Then I added a medley section of "Friends" songs (Whodini,
Beatles, The Killers, The Donnas, clips from Napoleon Dynamite, etc).
Reviewers rave, "It's got everything! Technical finesse, diverse
selections, and a Huge Smile Factor." It’s a fine example of
well-executed keyed samples and a medley section containing a bit
of humor and word play. All put together in a DMC / Ultimix / Mastermix
style.
What
people are saying
Special thanks to John Sakamoto of the Toronto Star who wrote a
great review and added it to his weekly column, The Anti-Hit List Podcast (July 30th, 2005). "This nine-minute megamix uses the
Dandy Warhols’ “We Used to Be Friends†as its focal point, but ranges
fearlessly across the musical landscape, from the Cars to Whodini
to Garth Brooks. - each singing about friendship - with ingeniously
interwoven bits of dialogue from Napoleon Dynamite."

It Takes Two 2 Kiss (Rob Base vs Prince) | MP3
Created January 2005 | Time:
4:08
My
most well-known track, this was my endeavor to create something
with mainstream dance floor appeal. Although it was created in January
of 2005, it's a track that could've been made 10 years from now
and still be popular. It Takes Two 2 Kiss is a straight forward
remix of "It Takes Two" by Rob Base vs. "Kiss"
by Prince (popular songs in the late 80's).
My strengths tend to
be production and hashing little medleys together, so this mix featured
a few extra samples and tracks including the infectious "Move
Your Feet" by Junior Senior. With pop culture appeal, it has
been requested for vinyl pressing among club DJ's throughout the
world. It's also been included in numerous compilation CD's
including the infamous underground bootleg Mash-Up CD, The Best Mashups In The World (Are From San Francisco) as well as a limited
edition 12†record release HERE

DJ John's personal favorite
Juke
Box Hero Project (classic rock vs rap medley)
| MP3
| Created August 2005 | Time: 7:24
A Mash-Up Medley of Classic
rock and retro hip hop. This piece is a Mash-Up Medley centered around
Foreigner's "Juke Box Hero". Like most of my productions,
it's chopped, mixed and edited for those afflicted with ADHD (in the
key of E minor). Lacks a bit of direction, but was fun as hell to
make. Scratches harnessed by the power of Serato (talk about a killer
production tool).
All
Mashed Up Elements
are taken from the following songs:
Foreigner "Juke Box Hero"
(1981)
Bob Seger "Turn The Page" (1976)
Notorious BIG "Hypnotize"
The Doors "Riders on the Storm"
The Game "This Is How We Do"
Kill Bill soundtrack "Battle Without Honor or Humanity"
Kid Rock "Bawitdaba"
Pink Floyd "Empty Spaces" & "Young Lust"
Rush "Tom Sawyer" (Z-Trip mix)
Audioslave "Show Me How To Live"
Captain Rock "Bongo Beat"
Sir Mix-A-Lot "Posse On Broadway"
Nine Inch Nails "Down In It"
Digital Underground "Humpty Dance"
and more...
"Devil
Candy Grillz" (Kid Rock vs Nelly vs 50 Cent +)
| MP3 | Created December 2005 | Time: 5:46
A blend of hard rock, rap and a bit of old school hip hop centered
around Nelly's latest, "Grillz". The usual DJ John production
with samples sprinkled throughout (everyone loves a good wickywah
at 1:17). This is really something for the rap crowd.
All Mashed Up Elements
are taken from the following songs:
Nelly "Grillz"
50 Cent "Candy Shop" (Instrumental)
Moby "Bodyrock"
Kid Rock "Devil Without A Cause"
LL Cool J "Kandy"

The D vs Girls vs others (2 Live Crew vs Prodigy) + Medley |
MP3 | Created August 2005 | Time: 10:15
This project originally started
as a mash-up using "Girls" by Prodigy and a classic 2 Live
Crew song, but overtime it evolved into a Mash-Up medley with nearly
30 elements weaved together. Two versions exist of this Mash-Up medley.
The first mix contains a spooky Aphrodite break that uses a cool Kasabian
beat. The other mix lacks these 2 elements but provides a more fluid
dance track. Done primarily in Ab minor, it speeds along at about 125 bpm.
What people are
saying Tim Andren of Andren Creative wrote a nice review on his Blog which
be found at anchormix.blogspot.com/. Scroll down to August 22, 2005
entry. "DJ John pieces together a megamix mashup of mayhem.
Thank the Lord someone else has a respect for the amazing 'New York,
New York' by Microchip League, a fierce cut that used to get played
by KROQ in the wee hours back when it was a real radio station.
You might not recognize all of the samples, but you will feel the
groove. Part of the fun in listening to this, aside from it being
a killer track, is tracing the historical path of where he goes
with his sample palette. Very well done."
All Mashed Up Elements
are taken from the following songs:
2 Live Crew "Throw The D"
Prodigy "Girls," Blur "Girls & Boys"
Technotronic "Get Up"
S Club 7 "Don't Stop Movin"
Green Day "Brain Stew"
Microchip League "New York, New York"

July 2005 | Time: 6:43
Originally starting out as experiment in meshing samples, I isolated
the bassline from the popular Matrix movie fight scene music (Propellerheads
"Spybreak") with the goal of layering samples on top. Some
parts are thick enough to make you puke (well, not really). A+B mash
fans stay away. Starts off slow, but builds up into a dancefloor jam,
clocking in at 127.7 bpm.

Nothing
But The Everlasting Story (Paul van Dyk vs Rodney O vs The Game vs
Lil Jon) | MP3 | Created March 2005
| Time: 7:23
The
mystical sounds of Paul van Dyk over classic hip hop beats creates
an interesting twist that has trance and hip hop heads rejoicing.
Various samples are sprinkled over a classic 808 drum beat to form
a a kick-ass break.
All
Mashed Up Elements
are taken from the following songs:
Rodney O "Everlasting Bass"
The Game - "Westside Story"
Lil Jon "What U Gon' Do"
Paul van Dyk "Nothing But You"
A
catchy groove between
the three main songs with
added samples from
Hashim's "Al-Naafiysh"
This is one of those mixes that has been laying around for a year or so and needed to be deleted or completed. I choose to complete it. The hook to No Doubt's "It's My Life" proved to be challenging and nothing seemed to work, other than just running it through a reverb as well as a delay (probably killed it, but oh well...).

This
mash-up was a simple one to create. Personally I get bored with simple
A+B mashes, although they can and often are the most effective and
pleasing to the ear. Comments have surprisingly positive in the GYBO
forum.
All
Mashed Up Elements
are taken from the following songs:
Chariots of Fire theme
Darude - Music
Fatboy Slim - Kalifornia
No Doubt - It's My Life (drum track)
Coldcut - Timber
This mash-up is for
listening pleasure and
not designed for the dance floor.
Bootleg 1 is a complicated mix involving many elements. "Children" by Robert Miles is the foundation of the mix. It's spacey, kinda ambient, and full of "harmonically keyed" samples. Bootleg 2 is a pretty simple mash of three songs. The bridge between the two boots was a experimental technique. Most of the songs float around the key of F minor and when I shift Children down 35%, it becomes A minor allowing a smooth transition into similar keyed songs in Boot 2. These are for listening pleasure and not designed for the dance floor.
A smattering of 80's
and 90's samples
embedded throughout
This one will likely appeal to those who grew up on rock music like I did. After hearing Les Rythmes Digitales "Jacques Your Body" in another TV commercial (this time the Olympus commercial during the recent Super Bowl), I figured maybe it was time to hack at it a bit. Here I added ACDC's "Thunderstruck" which seemed to match well harmonically. Enjoy!
An excellent mash-up
for any Halloween party!

Went Down to Georgia

| Created February 2005 | Time: 5:27
I think this track serves as an interesting example of two different genres
being mashed. Acid trance stuff vs Outlaw Country/Southern Rock. The
1979 hit, "Devil Went Down to Georgia" by the Charlie Daniels
Band is on fire with the help of "D.E.V.I.L." by 666. I'll
be burning in hell over this one.

Rockin
Down The House with Rum & Coca Cola" (MI 7 vs The Andrews
Sisters)
| MP3 | Created January 2006
| Time: 4:38
At
a recent DJ gig for some senior citizens (a New Year's Eve Party!),
I was thrown into a time warp of 1940s music. As a result, I found
myself the next day mashing The Andrews Sisters who were popular from
that period. One of their most popular songs was a catchy tune called
"Rum & Coca Cola". Catchy enough to justify a mash-up.
Interestingly enough, this 1944 hit was the subject of copyright infringement
at the time. Sixty-two years later, I’m subjecting it to bootlegging
again and pairing it with the old-school drum and bass classic "Rockin’
Down The House." Despite my reputation for signature mash-up
medleys, this is a simple A+B I did in one night. It's a diversion
from my usual work, but try this one on your grandparents or at the
next Calypso party. The oldsters at our local senior center like it
enough to induct it as their theme song for Tuesday night bingo meetings.
All Mashed Up Elements
are taken from the following songs:
MI 7 - "Rockin Down The House" 1991 (old school rave classic)
The Andrews Sisters - "Rum & Coca Cola" 1944 (WWII

It's a gem to use during the holiday season. I'm not sure how many will appreciate turntable stuff, but this is my rusty attempt at cuttin' & scratchin' Charlie Brown & the Peanut gang. Material was sourced off of the Charlie Brown DVD and an old, dusty 1977 record found at the library recently.
What people are saying Special thanks to John Sakamoto of the Toronto Star who wrote a great review and added it to his weekly column, The Anti-Hit List Podcast (December 17, 2005) .
