*** Check out this review of my friends from Diver Down which was posted at http://www.rocktributebands.com/diver%20down%208.4.07-2.html ************************************************************ **********************************************************Di ver Down – (A Tribute To Van Halen) O’Riley’s, 8/4/07 Dallas TX********************************************************** * A very ambitious set list from Diver Down this time around. Singer Johnny Lee Roth, Bassist Tony Michael, Guitarist Greg Edward, and Drummer Brian Halen threw down some incredible classics Saturday night at O’Riley’s. They proved once again that they are a “PURE VAN HALEN TRIBUTE”.Opening up with “Jump” was an obvious way to get the crowd ready to rock, but it was their second "On Fire" that really brought forth the memories of Van Halen’s 1979 “World Vacation” tour when that particular song was the opener in all their shows that year. The boys from Diver Down soldiered on by showing their true instrumentation during “Unchained” and then before we could catch our breath punched us in the face with Van Halen’s opening song during their 1982-83 “Hide Your Sheep” tour “Romeo Delight”. Only true die hard Van Halen fans truly recognize this song which Diamond David Lee Roth made famous by continuously forgetting the words on stage during that fabulous world tour.It was the set list that kept paying great tribute to Van Halen’s early material from 1978 to 1984. Diver Down threw down the gauntlet on this one and delivered one classic after another. It was made evident early on when the band decided to stay true to its roots and perform the songs that were not so much top ten radio hits, but tracks that were a sound staple in the annals of hard rock Van Halen. Songs like “Full Bug”, “Bottoms Up”, “And The Cradle Will Rock”, “Atomic Punk”, and the ever loving “Means Street” which was exceptional. As Diver Down continued to go down further into their set list the band just got better and better. The individual performances by each individual were nothing short of exceptional.Johnny Lee Roth exemplified his true showmanship with such charismatic appeal that you almost felt like you were watching David Lee Roth during Van Halen’s 1981 “Fair Warning” tour. Putting aside the fact that he could work a little more on Diamond Dave's high jump mid air splits, he did however look the part and duplicated almost word for word the on stage banter that was indicative of every Van Halen concert. Johnny Lee did in fact create an electric vibe that resonated throughout the entire performance. But let’s not forget the other important players In Diver Down that almost perfectly re-created the sound to one of the greatest bands of all time the mighty Van Halen. We have to start with drummer Brian Halen because without his double bass infusion we could not in any way absorb the very important and complicated tempo changes and percussion fills that Edward Van Halen made so viable to the Van Halen arrangements. On bass we saw Tony Michael not only looking very much the part of Michael Anthony but also hitting the bass lines with true proficiency. As most Van Halen fans know Michael Anthony was imperative in bring the back ground harmonized vocals to the front. Tony Michael did just that, playing his bass and his microphone like they were his long lost bitches. To fill the shoes of a legend who is arguably one of the top three guitar players of all time is nothing most musicians want to even attempt. Greg Edward however, is one of those crazy enough guitarist that will in fact attempt to put on those shoes that master Edward Van Halen has worn for more than 30 years. Greg Edward, except for some key parts in certain songs, did in fact re-create the tone of Eddie Van Halen. His timing and overall finger tapping was essential in this performance and was delivered with enthusiasm. He was a lot of fun to watch. I observed Greg closely all night and made a lot of observations that would require a whole nother page.Bottom line….forget “The Atomic Punks” from Hollywood California and go see “Diver Down”…They are for real. (By Joe Montells)SET LISTJUMP - ON FIRE - UNCHAINED - ROMEO DELIGHT - JAMIE'S CRYIN' - YOU'RE NO GOOD -FULL BUG - PANAMA - BOTTOMS UP - WHERE HAVE ALL THE GOOD TIMES GONE - HOT FOR TEACHER - AND THE CRADLE WIL ROCK - ATOMIC PUNK - GUITAR SOLO - MEAN STREET - RUNNIN' WITH THE DEVIL - YOU REALLY GOT ME - HAPPY TRAILS ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ************************************************************ Drowning Pool, Led Zeppelin, Pantera, Damage Plan, Puddle of Mudd, Swan Song, Invain, Godmsack, Metallica, Lynryd Skynyrd, Benevolence, Blue October, Third Eye Blind, Nickelback, Hinder, Default, Theory of a Deadman, Seether, Shinedown, Poison Cherry, Pat Green, Miranda Lambert, Brooks & Dunn, Randy Rogers, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Megadeath, Poison, Def Leppard, Nirvana, Candelbox, Sound Garden, Audioslave, The Black Crowes, Sarah McLaughlin, Sara Evans, Buckcherry, Rob Zombie, Filter, Three Days Grace, Three Doors Down, I'll finish this later - there are too many to list!
