MESSAGE TO THE RAP ARTIST
BY: Mark Goggins
This is not a condemnation of all rap artists-
It's just you ignorant ones I'll hit the hardest-
Some of you play the role of gangsters or players-
Playing with the minds of our young teenagers-
You have so much influence on our Black youth-
You could increase your value with mental upliftment-
'Cause a few of you rappers are exceptionally gifted-
But, right now you're more like puppets on a string-
Silly sisters and brothers liable to say anything-
Exploited by your distributor and record label-
You're a prime contributor to the mentally disabled-
If you cleaned up your act you'd gain some respect-
Stop selling us out for some White man's check!-
You've got women half-naked in your videos-
And you refer to my sisters as bitches and hoes-
I always hear you talk about your "dope" lyrics-
But, when will you ever get a revolutionary spirit?-
Since we live in a country that's separate and unequal-
Why don't you rap something to wake up your people?-
Why don't you put away your blunts and 40-ounce bottles?-
Can't you recognize our youth are in need of role models?-
Dont you even realize the impact you would make?-
If you rapped Black pride and gave this "gangster-thing" a break?-
If you rapped Black unity and Black power-
You could save a whole generation of kids from going sour-
So clean up your act and earn some respect.
'Cause the futer of our children is worth more than your check!
