About Me

[NOTE TO PEOPLE I'VE BEEN OUT OF TOUCH WITH: my old EFF e-mail address doesn't work any more; use mech~AT~well.com (change "~AT~" to the at-sign of course.)]

I'm some weird-ass mixture of nerd, former playah, P.R. maven, pool hustler, civil liberties spokesthing, scholar, barfly, industrofetish club freak, curmudgeon, soundingboard & shoulder to cry on, extroverted introvert (and vice-versa), scientist and artist, driven and lazy, gregariously shy and shly gregarious. Some will tell you I'm the sweetest person they know, and a few will say I'm an asshole (oh well! I've never been able to figure those few out. Not my problem.)

I lived for almost a decade in San Francisco, but moved to Toronto, Ontario in Feb. 2005, and am presently in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as of Sep. 2006.

Professionally, I am a web developer, running my own consultancy. I was most rencently otherwise employed as the development and tech director at a Toronto company called Integrity Incorporated . Previously, I worked for about 9 years with the Electronic Frontier Foundation , and did a 2-year stint with the CryptoRights Foundation as well. I specialize in helping sites get out of the "Browser Wars" by redesigning with strict adherence to Internet standards so that the sites work in all modern browsers and are easy to maintain and update. I've handled projects ranging from small garage band sites to serious multi-domain e-commerce sites built from the ground up on Perl, XML, PHP, and SQL, with multiple user levels, content management, and on-the-fly downloadable document generation. [GEEK! Yep.]

Avocationally, I sometimes go to industro-fetish-goth kinds of clubs, play local competitive pool, dabble in darts, and so forth and things. I hang out most Sundays at the Horseshoe Lounge in the Queen Street West district (T.O.) I like movies.

I am a big fan of public transit. I am not a morning person. An intellectual but not a snob. Oh, and I'm very silly most of the time. Sometimes it also refers to itself in the first person singular neuter, as if it were an alien space god. Also, it has a BEEG fat whiny kitty, who eats pistachios, hot peppers and alfalfa sprouts for some reason.

My Myers-Briggs (MBTI) personality type is mostly INTP, but I'm on the cusp between INTP (informative engineers, designers, architects), ENTP (directive engineers, inventors, setters of new standards), INFP (informative mediators, tutors, monastics), and ENFP (directive mediators, advocates, heralds). This is rather curious since at least 3 of these 4 personality types are found in 1-3% or less of the general population! Mostly I'm INTP, though.

I'd like to meet:

This must be the "this is really just a personals site" section. Fine, then. Here we go:

For dating or dating possibilities: Not looking very seriously right now, but I remain open to being flirted with. ;-) I'm not looking to get into too serious a relationship right now. I like non-psychodramatic women, smart and opinionated but not quarrelsome. Someone I could go to clubs or live shows with, maybe. Or a lady that likes to play pool and is good at it. That would rawk. A chick who is as into web development as I am would work too. I like nrrrdgrrrls. I also like interesting noses. I don't care about race, eye color any thing like that, other than I prefer petite/lean/thin up to buxom/curvy, and am not into the skeletal or the rotund. I don't drive in Toronto, so someone I could meet up with via a not too insane streetcar ride (or someone with wheels) would be good. Generally I don't date anyone under 27 at this point. Did I mention I don't like psychodrama? Heh.

For long-term relationships: Not likely to be available for that in the immediate future, but one never knows. I am polyamorous by nature, despite having tried monogamy several times. Just doesn't work for me. My slut phase is long since over, so even in poly relationships things tend to be "operationally monogamous" with me most of the time. Also be aware that I am an American living in Canada and do not have permanent residency yet, and may return to the US.

For BDSM play (which I enjoy but never "require" from anyone, whatever the relationship): I'm a top (occasional switch), but not a dom (i.e., I'm good with a flogger and other such implements, but am not particularly interested in master-slave role play. If you think you're going to convert me, you're mistaken and will be disappointed. Been there, done that, not my kink). Generally, I don't play with people I'm not into on other levels. BDSM is a very sexual activity in my worldview. That said, I am often available as a playdate for fetish events and stuff. With just the right sort of adventurous bottom, I find it a good way to get to know someone, but I've had too many negative experiences with random strangers, so unless I already know you at least a little bit, we're probably not going there; get to know me first.

For friends-with-perqs: It's like with BDSM stuff - you'll need to already be someone I know pretty well, so my posting any details about that is kinda pointless here. I'm not really out there looking for new people in this capacity, but like I say, I'm always open to being flirted with! If you know me already, just chat me up or something; don't be shy.

For just-friend stuff (whatever your gender): Anyone's fine by me really. I have all sorts of friends, and the more the merrier! This does NOT however mean I will grant random "friend" requests on MySpace other such sites. If we strike up a good e-chat over a goodly period of time and get to know each other online, THEN "friend" me.

Business networking: MySpace (like Friendster and Tribe and other glorified e-personals) is not suited for that at all. Look me up on LinkedIn and/or Ryze instead (and eCademy and AlwaysOn if you really want to try them, but I find Ryze and LinkedIn to pretty much have the business networking market in N. Am. at this point).

My Blog

It's nuts to blog on a site you don't control

I would never blog here (or at LiveJournal or at Blogger.com). You pour all this energy into a major work, spanning months or years, and then host it on a system you don't control, probably under sne...
