Acoustic Tradition

About Me

Profile edited with CricketSoda's Myspace Editor This site is just me picking the music I hold so dear in my heart. Growing up in Tennessee, one is constantly subjected to the beautiful world of acoustic music and the music I love to play derives from hundreds of years work, even going back into the old Celtic society. The family I am lucky enough to come from all play instruments going back to my great great grandparents who took their children to gospel singings nearly every weekend. My grandmother plays piano and sings very well and she passed it down to my mother who played saxophone and passed the love of music down to me. My father is a percussionist. He played with a southern rock band that went under several different names. He also has a fairly extensive collection of vinyl that are absolutely magnificent! I grew up tinkering with a piano and I still love to mess around with keys although I'm not all that good at it. In middle school I joined the band and selected to play trombone. In my second year playing trombone, I was the first person selected to Mid-State band from my school in over 20 years. I went on to qualify for Mid-State bands every year until I graduated and was also honored with All-State Band my junior year, having switched to playing euphonium by that time. My senior year, I was invited to record with the premier Tuba/Euphonium ensemble in the country under the direction of R. Winston Morris of Tennessee Technological University. Morris is an internationally renowned tuba/euphonium instructor, and one of the charter members of T.U.B.A. (Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association)... That's right... that's a real group, and as a former euphonium player, you should probably beware if you ever see them at a convention. Tuba players and lowbrass players in general can get kinda rowdy! I mean, c'mon, you don't think they spend all their time arranging "The Stars and Stripes Forever" for a tuba/euphonium ensemble, do you? We can party with the best of 'em! All that aside, Mr. Morris was one of my heroes for a very long time and thus I decided to begin my education at TTU with Mr. Morris, but due to personal circumstances with other professors there I decided to leave the university and go another way besides music education. Since then, I've been studying the guitar and various forms of acoustic music. The only guitar teacher I've studied with to date is a phenomenal player and teacher... one of my real heroes. His name is Jeff Rogers. He teaches at a place called the Renaissance Center in Dickson, TN as well as being on the faculty at Belmost College. I would just like to give a ton of credit to him for teaching me how to approach the guitar from a different viewpoint and clearing so many things up technique-wise. While I am currently not studying privately, I do plan to pick back up one of these days. I feel that you can never learn enough about an instrument no matter how long you've been playing or how good you get. I am currently seeking other, like-minded musicians to start a "newgrass-esque" band. As you can tell by my musical influences listed, my range is wide and growing everyday. If you're interested in playing some great acoustic music and expanding your repertoire to encompass all types of music, please give me a shout!
