At primary school he came under the influence of his first coach, Fitzroy Ball, who saw him as a sprinter. His schoolmate back then was Jamaica’s attacking wing back, Ricardo Gardner, who was the first Reggae Boy to get an overseas professional contract as a result of the country’s appearance at soccer’s 1998 World Cup finals. Germaine still keeps in touch with Gardner, who currently plays for Bolton Wanderers FC in the English Premiership. Germaine’s favorite track is the Eberstadt outdoor facility in Germany and he credits and thanks his first high jump coach, Owen Henry, as the person who first recognised his potential in the event and who insisted that he pursue it, despite strong resistance from the youngster himself. His most disappointing moment in his short career was at the World Indoor Championships in 2003 when he failed to clear a height in the qualifying round. He most admired fellow competitor is Mark Boswell of Canada and he gets his motivation to excel from his mother and his present coach Stephen Francis. Another of coach Francis’ charges, national sprint hurdles record holder Brigitte Foster, is his role model because of her exemplary work ethic. He has a deep interest in music and might seek a career in that industry after his competition days are over. He enjoys listening to reggae music, his favorite artist being Sizzla, and reading about Marcus Garvey in his spare time. His favorite food is steam fish and okra. He cleared 2.32 meters to win the 2003 Stockholm Super Grand Prix meeting, his fifth Jamaican outdoor high jump record, and then followed it up five days later by going over 2.34 meters to win the gold medal at the Pan American Games and place fifth at the 2003 IAAF World Championships in Paris,France2003.At the 2004 IAAF World In door Championships In Budapest, Hungary his career almost came to an end when he suffered an knee injury during the competition where he finish joint third,he then switch nationality to the birth of his fathers country Great Britain and Nothern Ireland..
