The Holy Curse

High-Energy R'n'R

About Me

New album out now. 11 tracks. With free cd version inside !!! Going straight to the source, The Holy Curse went to Tardis 2 studio, Sydney with Deniz Tek (Radio Birdman) and to Jim Diamond’s Ghetto Recorders (Dirtbombs, White Stripes, …), with guest appearances from Deniz Tek, Mark Sisto, and Gary Rasmussen............................................................. .................................. The Holy Curse is a French band whose raw and impassioned music breathes air into the wheezy lungs of rock and roll and tells it to get out of its sick bed and face the day. Lean and direct, lathered in guitar and impassioned vocals, their songs about life and love are an embodiment of melody and power, unfashionably packaged as Rock and Roll. “Rock and Roll” and “Commercial Success” are not co-existing terms in The Holy Curse’s home of Paris, France, where anything but Elvis wannabees , safe electro-pop or derivative rap crap is consigned to the gutters and cellars of the underground. And so it’s been for The Holy Curse for 15 years as their touring’s taken them all over Europe and further afield, including crusades through the USA, Australia and Japan. The Holy Curse carry a torch for the sort of hi-energy music that demanded an audience join in or get the fuck out. They take their lead from impeccable forebears, pulling together the threads of classic Detroit rock and roll from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, down a continuum that took in Sydney, Australia, in decade that followed. Think Sonic’s Rendezvous Band, the Stooges, the MC5, Radio Birdman and the New Christs for starters. Live, they’ve played with the Saints, the New Christs and Radio Birdman..................................................... ........... ............................................................ ................................. To buy it, go to www.holycurse.net , page shop. The Holy Curse started out - without the article - as a five piece, around 1994 or maybe the end of 1993. These were hard times for straight rock'n'roll in France, so the band had only recorded a single (the much sought after "Invasion of Powerful Guitars", with a rare version of Kinda Crime by the Nomads on the A-side) and album, Livin' With a Head, within five years. Things got better after that and their second album, Hereafter, received rave reviews; the band started to tour France intensively, playing anywhere it was possible, getting to play with r'n'r legends, Radio Birdman,Scott Morgan's Hydromatics, to name but three of their favourite bands. At the same time, They started co-hosting the (in)famous Sonic RendezVous shows in Paris, DJing high-energy r'n'r parties in Paris bars (le Petit Garage, Kata bar, Cantada), playing and writing with other musicians (among them punk rocker & globe-trotter Simon Chainsaw, dub revolutionaries Urban Navahos, and voodoo art-rockers Dimi Dero Inc, the Cinders), and running an independant record shop in Marseille : LOLLIPOP MUSIC STORE. The release of Bluer than Red in 2004 definitely established The Holy Curse as one of the best high-energy rock'n'roll bands in France. The band has toured East Coast Australia in October 2005, where the article was added to the name - after Penny Ikinger had sung - chanted, rather - "And now The Holy Curse" to introduce the band at the Union Hotel, in Prahran. On the recording front, The Holy Curse, never a prolific band, have returned to the legendary Kaiser studio in spring 2005, and recorded at Tardis Studios while in Australia, with Deniz Tek in the production seat. The first single from these sessions has just been released. Then the Holy Curse have played a few shows in Tokyo (Japan) in August 2006, and a north-east US tour is on the cards for Mai 2007. The band will take advantage of this tour to cut a bunch of new songs at Jim Diamond's Ghetto Recorders in order to finish their new album.Full discography, more info, pics and MP3's on www.holycurse.net ................................ ............................................................ ................................................ http://www.i94bar.com/singlesbar.html ...........................................more ............................................................ ....................... http://www.i94bar.com/ints/zeno_wrap.html .................................. http://gigreviews/zeno_paris2.html ................................ http://www.i94bar.com/staff.html ............................................ http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/reviews/music/3476/ ............. http://www.pbsfm.org.au/Doc ............................................................ . .......................................... view more pics ............................... And so it goes with Album Number Four (Number Five if you count their double disc compilation/live effort on Aussie label Off The Hip.)The Holy Curse wed driving guitar rock to melodies in a way most of their competitors can only dream of. It's proudly in the same vein as the Radios, and the New Christs (even moreso), delivered with soul and passion that can't be faked. With "Feed The Dogs" they take a psychedelic route to reach the same destination."Feed The Dogs" is where guitarist Sonic Polo really steps up to the plate. A twin-guitar band for many years, Holy Curse had cause to take stock and reassess things with the departure of their other six-string compadre, Pascal, prior to their 2005 Australian tour. A few of the old tunes went by the wayside and the band wrote a stack of newies. "Feed The Dogs" was Polo's opportunity to work on his own terms and expand his sonic palette. He didn't waste it. If we're talking about a move further into psychedelic territory (like on the epic "The Music & The Noise", "Bye Bye Preacherman" and "The Other Side") then we should stress that The Holy Curse haven't forsaken their love for what's loosely termed Detroit Rock. This album rocks as hard as any of its predecessors. In that vein, "RSVP" is a tough-as-nails love song (that you should have grabbed on a split single with Johnny Casino & The Secrets, also on Turborock). "Sister Soul" is a crunching hip-shaker with an irresistible chorus and an engine block made on a production line in the Motor City. "Let's Go Surfin'" pits Birdmanish wave-riding with "Distemper"-era New Christs dissonance. "The Music & The Noise" is a rippling, powerful song that might be frontman Eric Holycurse's best recorded vocal. The Holy Curse never overplay their hand, however, and the rhythm section always maintains a deftness and drive. There's a great feel at the heart of the closer "Universal Children" to underline the fact. Someone reckoned anger is an energy. There's plenty of both in "Cash Machine", a stinging rebuke of reality TV-fueled pap, and the grim narrative of "Bye Bye Preacherman" where a kiddy-fiddling priest gets his just deserts. On the other hand, there's lots of humour in the noisy blues lament "Shit Happens" which sounds like it was a ball to record. Committed to tape with analog gear over three continents at studios in France, Detroit and Sydney, "Feed The Dogs" involves produciton assists from Gary Rasmussen (Sonic's Rendezvous Band), Deniz Tek and French psych master Lucas Trouble (The Vietnam Veterans). Guest vocals from Mark Sisto and Dr Tek sit alongside a guitar contribution from Rasmussen. It's only on LP but if you're quick here or ask the band nicely you might score a bonus CD promo of the album. Grab it and hear one of last Real Rock and Roll bands.
