Driver hits rail on Interstate 610; vehicle flips several times Saturday, October 26, 2007By Walt Philbin
A 1-year-old boy was killed Friday afternoon when he was ejected from a vehicle that hit a guardrail and flipped several times on Interstate 610 in Gentilly, police said.Seven other people in the vehicle, including another infant and a child, were taken to University Hospital, police said. The extent of their injuries was not disclosed. The 1-year-old was identified as Justan Staggers. He was pronounced dead at University Hospital at 5:29 p.m., said John Gagliano, chief investigator for the Orleans Parish coroner's office.
A woman, said by relatives to be the baby's mother, was driving a Toyota 4Runner west on I-610 near the St. Bernard Avenue on-ramp shortly before 5 p.m. when she lost control of the vehicle, said police officer Shereese Harper, a spokeswoman for the Police Department. The 4Runner hit a guardrail and flipped several times, ejecting the baby, police said. He was not in a car seat, police said.Ambulances raced to the scene and took the baby and the seven other occupants to University Hospital.A woman who said her daughter loaned the vehicle to the driver, a friend, said the other two children in the vehicle were her grandchildren, a 9-month-old girl and a child who is 4 or 5. The woman, who asked that her name not be published, said the infant who died and his mother lived in eastern New Orleans near the woman's daughter. She didn't know where they were heading at the time of the crash.Police did not release the driver's name. The cause of the accident is under investigation, Harper said.A woman at the scene and other relatives said they were told that the woman driving the 4Runner swerved to avoid a vehicle that had moved into her lane. Police said they had received no information about another vehicle being involved in the crash. The baby's grandmother, waiting in the back seat of a car parked on St. Bernard Avenue near the foot of the I-610 on-ramp for word of the boy's condition, was taken by ambulance to a hospital. Relatives and National Guardsmen feared she may have had a heart attack when word came from the hospital that her grandchild had died. Her condition wasn't known Friday night.Police blocked off westbound traffic on a stretch of I-610 approaching St. Bernard Avenue for about three hours until the accident could be cleared, Harper said.
