Article on Ruwanga Samath
As Ruwanga “Ru†Samath matures in age, so does his music, and more importantly, his distinct ideas on the production of the perfect beat married to intoxicating rhythms. Born in 1985 in Sri Lanka, the island situated few miles away from the southern tip of India, Ru was raised in a musical environment that fostered creative freedom. His mother, Renuka Samath, before moving to America, was a pianist/vocalist of renown in Sri Lanka, and passed on her love and passion for music by training him on the piano. Ru later attended a school for gifted children, where he received top honors for music theory and piano. While attending, Ru was exposed to European style Techno, Reggae, Dancehall and pop music. Ru’s parents shifted their base to America in 1997, and he soaked in a melting pot of pop, hip-hop, rap and R&B music. Ru steadily began to incorporate Sri Lankan influence during marathon solo recording sessions at his home studio; in the process he has created literally hundreds of tracks. Ru fuses intricate, subtle rhythms from his Indonesian roots into hip-hop music that is exploratory in nature, but right in pocket. Producers the Neptunes, Dr. Dre, Scott Stroch and Timbaland were some of his early inspirations. Ru has created a 100% sample-free, totally unique sound and style that is quickly separating him from his peers. “I just like to convert feelings into sounds,†Ru reveals. “Hip Hop will always be around. Hip-hop will continue to evolve; it’s the rock-n-roll of our generation.â€Written By - Gary D. Jackson (Hollywood Reporter)
