SMA Records was started in 1995 after some Minneapolis bands got together and decided to start their own label because they couldn't figure out how to get on any other label. None of these bands were on the "inside track". They weren't savvy shmoozers, they didn't go to college, they didn't know what they were doing aside from making a big noise and having a damn good time doing it. "Those major labels can suck my ass!" Jimmy Kennedy said. The first thing they did was make t-shirts and stickers. Then the first Glenrustles album came out and there was no turning back. 10+ years later SMA Records has become a "label" run by the bands--for the bands to use to help each other out in the way of meandering through the music business and get their music out there to like-minded individuals. It could be called a cooperative, it could be called a club, it could be just what it is; a label. What we're actually trying to do is revolutionize the music industry. Who needs it? Just play some fuckin' tunes and don't quit yr day job!
