MEET RINSE DJS: REKLESS AND PALEFACE
(This Interview Is Taken From Rinse Fm Website On Monday 21st April 2008)
Imitation is innovation's downside. In music, it happens like this: a group of producers come together in a kind of movement and develop a new sound. Then, as soon as it takes off, everyone starts trying to get in on it.
"Apparently", says Paleface, "someone's copied my mix of 'Booty Luv', 'Some Kinda Rush'. They've copied the bassline, like identical. Loads of people have told me already. Everyone's copying!"
'Kinda Rush's bouncing acid bottom line typifies bassline's appeal. It's a stomper. Since first T2 and then Platinum & H20 have dominated the top rungs of the UK garage chart, and London based A&Rs have started panting after the next big track from a music that developed in clubs in the North of England, the copying has begun.
It's big but it's not from London...
A lot of people in London" says Rekless, "are trying to make bassline. But it's not the bassline that we know, it's not... it's mad, it's not the same. They might think 'yeah' put a walking bassline there and there and there, but they don't get it." It happened with jungle, UKG, and most recently dubstep. When the duplication is poor, it lowers the overall quality levels. And people start thinking they want to make a certain genre, mistake one particular style as definitive, and come up with clones that dilute that style's original impact. "They don't understand why tunes do what they do", adds Paleface, "because they don't know what the raves are like. It's a culture."
Actually they don't come from up North either. They both grew up in South London on a combination of pirate radio and raves. More raves for Paleface, because he lived in Brixton, "which is at the bottom of some ditch" so for radio you'd have to "stick a coat-hanger out the window and you might get 10 minutes of a Blackmarket set if you're lucky". Now 28, he started DJing jungle in 94, and in 98 switched to garage. He used to produce garage tracks with J Da Flex. Rekless (24 years old) started Djing in 1999 after he realised that as he was successfully telling his mate who Djed what would go off in the dances, he might as well have a go himself. Both him and Paleface have played on an intimidatingly long list of stations. Rekless joined Rinse two and half years ago after Bossman saw him DJing at a night in Croydon and got him on the station. Paleface joined earlier this year. They both remember listening to Rinse back in the day.
...even though they helped make it happen... "How I got into the basslines scene was a bit mad" says Rekless "because before I knew about it I was making 4/4 tracks with basslines on it, but I didn't know there was a scene." But his tunes started getting played in the scene, and he got hooked in.
"Same with me!" says Paleface. "I made 'Danger' in 2002, I made 'Messy' in 2003. And they worked." His first bassline night was at the semi-legendary Niche, but that's not where he says it kicked off for him - it was at a club in an industrial estate near Dewsbury, that was like a "big cowshed". He even moved up to Leeds for a while, but got out when violence started spoiling the vibes.
Paleface co-founded Northernline Records, at a time when there was a "massive" bassline scene but no press, no distribution, no nothing. They got a distribution deal with Mystical, who also did deals with the likes of
T2 and
Jammy D. That's how it started translating into the charts.
...and it's NOT called 'NICHE'!So now it's taking off, who's gonna do the quality control? With sequencers so easily available, and sampling and sounds simplified, anyone can get hold of the software, listen to bassline at home, and go "oh yeah that's this sound here" (a big eyed Paleface mocks pushing a keypad). It's not the A&Rs, who are ringing up Paleface asking him to tell them what's big. "You got A&Rs asking dubstep artists for bassline, they don't know!", says Rekless.Nope. It's gonna be up to the DJs.
"And it's not 'Niche!'" adds Paleface. "Niche is a club In Sheffield that got shut down because of violence. It got shut down to such a degree that they're not allowed to use the word 'Niche' to advertise anything they do in Sheffield. People down here don't know that."
"It's like calling dubstep 'FWD'!" nods Rekless.Paleface's is on Rinse 7-9pm on Mondays.
Reckless is on Tuesday 3-5pm, and Saturdays 9-11pm.
