About Me

Kurukulla – Formerly Known as Black Light Scene
Black Light Scene in their previous incarnate are no more. After several line-up changes, one name change, and a whole new sound Kurukulla are louder and edgier.
Having toured the country, filling venues as far apart as Liverpool’s Cavern Club and Camden’s Underworld, Kurukulla have gained a reputation for high-energy, high-octane stage shows, with their infectious blend of mainstream melodies, philosophical lyrics and riffs that catch you off guard.
Blurring generic borders, Kurukulla tick several boxes, meaning that they have something to offer everyone, without diluting their originality.
Citing bands such as The Cure and smashing pumpkins among their influences, Kurukulla are one of the hardest working bands around. Every part of the process, from rehearsing and writing, to promoting and gigging, this band exudes energy and genuine ambition, that is refreshing in a world of falseness and commercialism.
The last demo, described as “kick-ass tunes that smack you in the face” (toxicpete.com) received airplay on BBC radio as well as attracting fans globally.
Kurukulla, as they stand at the moment, consists of four experienced musicians, with over twenty years of stage performing between them.
Vocalist David Page combines raw passion with melodic harmonies and beautifully crafted lyrics, in a style referred to as ‘melodocore’. Drummer Jimi Nicholls uses his grindcore roots to full effect in his energetic performances, providing a solid thumping pulse for six-stringer Al Withers to build on. With his complex and often unusual riffage Al’s talent displays years of meticulous practice in a style that complements Page’s vocals and quirky lyrics perfectly. Completing the rhythym section is new arrival Matt Golgotha. Combining Matt's hardcore experience with the already established sound brings a whole new dimension to the band.
First meeting the band, in their Black Light Scene form, I was left with a taste but not completely satisfied. Since the image/sound makeover, even this jaded critic has to admit that Kurukulla are definitely going places. Right now, they’re here and they’re here to stay.
