The vaguely chronological collection follows a narrator who most of the time is unnamed. (In €œOther Desires,€? which first appeared as a chapter in Elliott€™s novel Happy Baby, he is referred to as €œTheo.€?) Like Elliott, he€™s the product of an erratic, violent Chicago home and the state facilities in which he spent the majority of his teens. And, also like Elliott, he€™s a submissive with a kink streak that stretches back to his late teens, at which time he harbored fantasies about his group-home mom dressing him in women€™s underwear and parading him around on a leash.
His fantasies would eventually become a fetish €œfor being burned and cut and spit on.€? No surprise that he finds trouble as he looks for ways to sate his desires. In the first of these stories, €œFirst Things First,€? he is tied to a bed, his body grazed by a knife-wielding Dutch dominatrix in an Amsterdam hotel room.
Elliott€™s spare, understated style is a good counterpoint to the sensational subject matter. In the title story, the protagonist meets up with his girlfriend in the city (San Francisco, where Elliott himself now lives). Elliott€™s description of their night together is so matter-of-fact that you might not register a passage like €œShe stripped me naked and kept her own clothes on. She gave me a hard spanking. She grabbed my hair and banged my head into the floor several times.€? Then the tone shifts: €œIt was all made up. A game. But I started to feel sad when she mentioned my father.€? The narrator left home at 13, but then his father €œcaught me and beat me and shaved my head and the state took custody. . . . We try to mend things but I get these letters from him and it€™s just too much. He thinks he€™s the victim.€? The narrator€™s sexual desire is invariably enmeshed with his tumultuous past. When a dominatrix works him over, he thinks about his childhood and his father. Or as he says flatly, €œI eroticize my childhood abuse.€?
Elliott distinguishes €œkinky€? from healthy S&M. And his book€™s happy ending (an epilogue called €œMy Mainstream Girlfriend€?) doesn€™t involve discarding his fetish. Instead, he discovers that he€™s able to play in the bedroom without dragging his past into it: €œThis time, instead of thinking about my father and all the bad stuff that happened to me when I was younger, I€™m thinking about what she looks like fucking me. I€™m also thinking about a hamburger and a chocolate shake. . . . It€™s a deep hunger, a deep sex hunger. That€™s not just normal, that€™s all-American.€?

Questo libro ci da la visione del femdom dagli occhi di una Padrona a pagamento. Lei è una bella e ambiziosa ragazza che per motivi economici si presta prima a ballerina e accompagnatrice, poi a dominatrice.
E' così vive una doppia vita, tra studio all' università di giorno e completini in latex la sera.
Il prezzo è di 300 dollari e lei usa quell'ora per sfogarsi e scaricarsi dello stress accumulato all' università.
Conosce mille uomini diversi, con fantasie e perversione diverse, imparandoli a gestirli diventa sicura di se, del suo potere di donna dominante. I clienti più assidui le fanno mille favori e regali; medici, vigili, avvocati...ognuno viene usato da questa ex-"ragazza impaurita" dalla vita.

Alla fine che abbia raggiunto o no il suo obbiettivo, è diventata una donna forte e sicura di se. Usa centinaia di uomini per arrivare dove non sarebbe mai arrivata da sola. Bella la frase "Li usavo come rampa di lancio per arrivare dove volevo, il che era esattamente quello che loro avrebbero dovuto augurarmi: essere felice, no?"
Il voto ad un libro non saprei darlo...comunque lo consiglio...leggere fa bene e questo libro mette anche di buon umore.
