///////////////In Timbaland boots and a hooded sweatshirt, Gregory Shaw II is exactly what you would expect when you hear the word "RAPPER." But after speaking with this New Jersey native, it's clear that this artist is anything but typical. At twenty-five years old, C-QUEL lives in a suburban area of Jersey with his younger brother and parents who have been married for more than three decades. Unlike most rappers who earn respect by boasting about growing up in the projects or in tough neighborhoods, C-QUEL wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world. "I love Jersey, it's so calm. Everyone is so different in the city, it's beautiful here," he proudly describes.C-QUEL knew the importance of going to college when he graduated high school, and quickly enrolled himself in The Richard Stockton College of NJ. After earning a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, he wrote songs as an after-school hobby. While most people do not associate hip hop artists with college, C-QUEL feels that the two subjects are not that far apart. "I followed the writing and the formats and the structure that you learn in school and I applied that to writing songs and poems," Shaw explains.Feeling that he has an advantage over other artists because of his writing ability, C-QUEL never imaged having a career in the hip-hop industry. He is mainly influenced by his father and respects the advice that he has given him over time. So when his father approached him about song-writing, he took an interest in writing lyrics and creating songs. He later learned how to produce his own beats and found other people in the music hip-hop business to help him. C-QUEL quickly learned that he was improving and he could make money in the industry, and decided to pursue music as a career.While C-QUEL sights Tupac, Biggie and Common as his biggest inspirations, he believes that his songs are original and come from within. "Every track that I do also sounds very different but at the same time when you hear it, it sounds like its coming from my soul. It doesn't sound like you're just hearing it, you feel what I'm saying, you're a part of it," he expresses.C-QUEL breaks the mold of the stereotypical rapper, because he focuses on creating great music without the use of any profanity. His lyrics are able to convey his message without the use of vulgarity, which would allow a record company to save additional money because they will only have to release one version of his music.The self-proclaimed "Garden State Great", is now working with New Jersey car clubs to further his career and broaden his range of versatility. C-QUEL is now preparing for his video shoot that will taking place in June/July.
