A few years ago when my sister Cathy was in remission, her doctor suggested she go on a retreat weekend with other cancer survivors. In one workshop she was asked to visualize her cancer and write a story about it. She thought and thought about this task, and then it came to her. Many years ago she used to raise silk worms to show to her pre-school children. When she thought about it, she realized, the metamorphasis of cancer is like the metamorphasis of a caterpiller. She saw herself as a caterpiller, just going through life not knowing anything different. Having cancer is like being trapped in a cacoon. Your'e working so hard to find your way out, but during the process you have time to think. You think about all the things your going to do different when you emerge. You begin the process of the metamorphasis. When you do reach the end, and you emerge from the darkness, you find yourself a beautiful butterfly. No matter how hard the journey was, she always said cancer was a blessing. She never would have become the butterfly, had she not fought her way out from the cacoon.
