"To know and not to do, is to not know..." - Chinese Proverb...The mission of GigsRus.net is to know what's next! I started dj'ing at 17 with one turntable at an abandoned store front. I was a club kid in LA and used to dance on the street for money on Hollywood and Highland.As an undergrad at UC Berkeley, I got my FCC license and co-hosted and produced a weekly political affairs segment at night and sold underwriting to local clubs and businesses during the day. KALX 90.7FM was and is considered one of the top 3 college radio stations in the country and we literally broke records.In college I started booking nooners for touring nationals. This led to some epic Lower Sproul Plaza engagements with platinum-selling acts. Learning the ropes organically and applying the skills gleaned from years of up-close contact with all sides of the business--from merch sales, radio programming, studio production and recording, soundscan venue reporting, to NACA tour management and festival bookings--has allowed me to share invaluable niche knowledge wth my clients and watch them thrive. "Into The Wild" - This cautionary, unsentimental tale from director Sean Penn, manages to glisten with energy, optimism and youthful passion for life and the wonders of self-discovery. Penn's rendering of the detail of his lead character's (Emile Hersh) emotional undertow and Hersh's portrayal of an unlikely adventurer, is spot on. The Innocence Project helps exonerate the wrongly accused, many of whom have been incarcerated for 20 or more years. ~88% of those falsely accused and convicted of capital crimes like rape and murder, were put there based on false eyewitness testimony. Most states have no compensation laws on the books, so when these innocent men are released after having their lives and the lives of their loved ones completely ruined, the state just says--sorry, you're free to go now. Now had they been actually guilty, served time and gotten parole after their term, they'd be eligible for therapy programs, reintegration funds, transitional housing assistance and job placement services. As it stands now in the US, the exonerated cannot even get their records expunged, so reintegration into society is impossible with violent felonies on their record and many years of institutionalization severely affecting their sense of identity, manhood and hampering their future employment and prospects. Go see the film "After Innocence". It will open your eyes to the pitiful system of jurisprudence that we blindly uphold with our silence. A system that seeks only to beat down the incarcerated and break the spirits of the interned. Props go out to the folks at The Safer Foundation, who've worked for 30 years to provide transitional job placement for ex-offenders, dramatically helping to reduce recidivism one citizen at a time.We in the San Francisco Bay Area are blessed to have had the opportunity to live and work alongside soldiers that have committed their lives to sacrifice, uplift, revolutionary expression and a principled spiritual journey.
