Writing (poetry, social/political commentary) - Reading (primarily non-fiction pertaining to points of political interest, but i also read the works of those poets that i admire) - Cooking (one of those wildly experimental chefs given to trying the oddest of combinations) - Collecting rare sneakers (I have a sneaker problem, no doubt. But at least I wear them, instead of tucking them away, unworn, in some closet) - Navigating through the unchartered waters of my life.
Anyone who can laugh at life's endless parade of irony.
Intelligent, grounded, and unassuming individuals who're comfortable with the man or woman they see in the mirror. Here's what I'm currently listening to: Elzhi: Europass
I listen to music that inspires me to be the best I can be and to love life. Some other artists I vibe to: Jay Electronica - Dave Ghetto - Tabi Bonney - The Roots - Little Brother - Ransom - Common - Oddisee - Rhymefest - Lupe Fiasco ( while not a fan of his first album, i can't deny that the second effort, The Cool, approaches a state of sonic urgency that few manage to achieve) - Elzhi - Consequence - Brand Nubian - De La Soul - Median - Murs - Mos Def - Foreign Exchange - Reflection Eternal (though Talib has fallen off)...Tanya Morgan - Marvin Gaye - Foreign Exchange (Phonte and Nicolay)- Lauryn Hill (great singer and lyricist) - Cormega - Pete Rock - J-Dilla (loved his production) - Nas - Kanye - Van Hunt - Outkast (primarily Andre -- the cat is a gifted poet) - CeeLo (or, as he's now known, Gnarls Barkley) - Jahiem - Bob Marley - Ed OG - Miles Davis - Amel Larrieux - MadLib - Kev Brown - Egdar Allen Floe - Median - MF Doom - Bumpy Knucks - Gangstarr - anyone else crafting music that's beautiful and true to who they are.
I recently watched Europa Europa, the true life story of the struggles encountered by a teenager as he attempts to mask his Jewish ancestry during the Holocaust. I've also seen: Devil in a Blue Dress- Deliverance - Guinevere - Brokedown Palace - High Fidelity - After Hours - The Shawshank Redemption - Factotum - The Lookout - Gone Baby Gone - 3:10 to Yuma - Eastern Promises - Hot Fuzz - Shaun of The Dead - Miller's Crossing - Midnight Cowboy - The Last Kiss - The Falcon and the Snowman - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Leaving Las Vegas - The Pianist - Motorcycle Diaries - Reservoir Dogs - Akira - Grave of The Fireflies - Unforgiven (seen it a million times) - LA Confidential - Mo Better Blues (an underrated Spike Lee effort) - In Good Company - Do The Right Thing - WonderboysWhen I can think of more, I'll put them up here.
Don't watch much Television, besides Frontline PBS (When it's a topic of interest) - The Shield - Six Feet Under - The Sopranos - The Wire - Curb Your Enthusiasm (4 HBO shows in a row -- I smell a pattern) - I don't really watch the "news," because it isn't honest journalism. Media outlets are shills for the government, propaganda machines that package and disseminate a false reality plied to a public that feels it has no other choices.
I am presently reading Crabcakes: A memoir by James Alan McPherson
Black Boy by Richard Wright (my favorite novel, an inspiration of sorts) - Living Our Stories/ Telling Our Truths: Autobiography and The Making of the African-American Intellectual Tradition by V.P. Franklin - And Then We Heard Thunder by John Oliver Killens Conversations with Amiri Baraka - The Autobiography of Leroi Jones/Amiri Baraka - The Long Dream by Richard Wright - Henry Miller on Writing - Another Country by James Baldwin - Nobody Knows My Name: more notes of a native son by James Baldwin - The Autobiography of W.E.B. I'm not one for idolatry, but there are those for whom I have much admiration:Ghandi - Nelson Mandela - Malcom X - Amiri Baraka - W.E.B. Dubois - Coretta Scott King - Harry Belafonte - Fidel Castro - Noam Chomsky - Spike Lee - James Baldwin - Jimi Hendrix - Richard Wright - Thurgood Marshall - Patrice Lumumba - My dad (he and I aren't as close as I'd like, but he's the principal reason I'm the man I am)
