It's Just a Ride

About Me

After teaching myself guitar on a prison ship bound for India at the age of 7 using an improvised instrument made of a broom handle and six resonant strings of barbed wire, I jumped ship and ended up on a little-known island off the coast of Madagascar. The natives, hip to Hendrixian harmonics thanks to a VHS of the Woodstock festival that had providincially fallen off of a crashing comercial jetliner whose passengers later became the inspiration for the hit television show Lost, continued my rigourous guitar/ninjitsu training. Upon my re-introduction into civilization, I found that guitarists were only slightly more in demand than ninjas, and decided to strike out a career in music. After a brief stint as a general member in the Royal Brotherhood of Exiled Rulers of the Universe of the Gamma Trinity, I began hitchhiking to Austin in the beds of chicken-hauling pickup trucks, much in the style of a smarter, more revolutionary, much more handsome Che Guevera, with nothing but my trusty guitar Beatrice and a towel granted to me as a boon for my prodigious rockin' by an intergalactic information gathering planet spelunker named Ford. As a postmodern Ulysses bound for everything and nothing save my next meal and a couch to sleep on, it'd be kind of you to remember me when you're safe and warm in your bed; I'll be in the urban wilds of A-town, saving Bohemia for all that would care to visit.

Influences: Jimi Hendrix, Allman Brothers, Led Zepplin, Radiohead, Norah (Soon to be Pruitt) Jones, The Band, Nick Drake, Ian Moore, Bob Dylan, DMB, Beatles, Grateful Dead, Phish, Martin Sexton, Ben Harper, Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, ACDC, Joe Cocker, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, SRV, DaVinci's Notebook, Ben Folds, The Allman Brothers Again Because they're totally sweet, Government Mule, Bella Fleck, Old School Santana, Jeff Buckley, Amos Lee, and of course, the unyieldingly beautiful and talented Megan Norman.
Sounds Like: You never know what you’ll hear at a Cody Pruitt show: a Led Zeppelin tune might mutate into Dave Matthews, then into Buffalo Springfield, then back into Zep; you may hear Baba O’Reilly done on a single guitar, or the only verse he knows from some obscure Beatles tune for that one cute girl in the back, with little or no warning for shocked and amazed fans. Cody Pruitt and his subsidiaries are therefore not legally responsible for heart attack, shock, epileptic seizure, potential harm to pregnant women and their unborn children, or heads just outright exploding due to excessive rockin’ vibes. Cody’s influences range from the Beatles and Bob Dylan to Ian Moore, Ravi Shankur, Toots and the Maytals, Peter Frampton, Mitch Hedburg, Albert Schweitzer, Jimi Hendrix, Soren Kierkegaard, George Carlin, The Allman Brothers and Pablo Neruda. He tries to write his own material, and occasionally, despite his best efforts to the contrary, one slips out into a show. Many think that this reluctance to present original songs is due to him being uncomfortable with his writing (he’s been known to say that he could “eat alphabet soup and defecate better lyrics” than he writes), but the hesitancy is actually due to a court mandate prohibiting him from releasing too much original material at once, as the overwhelming rockiosity of a Cody Pruitt production could destablalize the entire music industry (and, it’s speculated by a team of physicists, the space/time continuum itself). Therefore, originals are presented few and far between, in order to keep the playing field level and preserve the honor of maidens everywhere.

John Kerry Can't Make a Joke

John Kerry's a good guy. I like him. He served his country, then came back and protested the war; he put up with numerous assaults by people who had no factual basis spreading word that he really hadn...

Happiness is a Warm Gun

John Lennon wrote that "Happiness is a Warm Gun". Alledgedly, he took the idea from one of Charles Schultz' "Peanuts" strips, in which Lucy holds Snoopy and proclaims that "happiness is a warm puppy"...
