How long have you been rapping?
I have been doing music about 4 years. I started rapping when I was in the 9th grade.
Why did u start rapping?
I have always loved listening to music since I was about 3 but I honestly don’t know why I started rapping. I ask myself that when times don’t seem to get any better in this music. I have always been good at it though. When I was 14, I didn’t have too much I could do. My options were not all over the place. I had to either make art like I had been doing since I was 2, hoop which I wasn’t too good at or make music. I think I just wanted to do something different. When I went to this art school in Downtown Oakland though, it kind of just pushed it out of me, and I didn’t want to stop doing it. Rapping felt good and opened up a part of me that I didn’t even know was there until I started doing it more and more. It feels good when I do music. I did not have a real solid motive for starting though, I just picked up the pen and pad and ever since then, I been doing it.
Who are your musical influences? And why?
Someone influences me, in music, because I spend some time around them and understand where they are coming from and why they rap the way they do, not because of their music alone. I have to be able to feel you and know something about you other then your tracks you put out. The Jynx is a musical influence because he has both talents of singing and rapping. Also, who in the East Bay is under age 21 and can do that as well as he can? Young Gully is an influence and an artist who I feel is a lyrical genius. Not many people can rap like him if they tried! My nigga Tay of the group 3 of a Kind is an influence because he is a powerful lyricist if you listen closely to what he is saying. Those 3 are my I mentioned are my musical influences.
How do you feel about the bay music scene?
I feel like it’s harder to get put on out here. Between the bootlegging and the hating, I don’t know. The Industry changes every single day also. The industry seems like it is full of bull shit. My nigga PF “Walter†put me on game on how it works every chance he gets to let me know what I’m getting myself into. What I have learned from experience is, it’s mostly about who you know and how much money you have to spend. Someone can be weak as hell and get put on because they have money and they paid their way to the top. You cant be mad at that, but than I ask myself, what about the people who are struggling to get put on and are raw? So I don’t know what to think about the industry because I’m not in it 100% yet. I’m just at the beginning stages. Ask me that same question in a few months and I’ll have a direct answer for you. I do know it can be a shady and crazy industry though in general.
What projects are you working on?
I am investing most of my time in working on singles to push on the radio this summer. Aside from that, in my spare time, I am working on a CD called “The Classic†and as a prequel to the CD I’m working on a crazy ass mix tape with my DJ, DJ GUINNESS called “The Overdose: Shot Oneâ€. I don’t know when any of this is dropping, I’m still trying to get in the studio good, but its coming a long one day at a time though. My page will be rolling with new collaborations and solo songs in the weeks to come.
What are your resolutions for 2008?
I want a single on the radio in heavy rotation by November of 08 and to do as many shows as possible in that time through California. I think realistically, which is the problem for a lot of teens my age doing music. Jay Z didn’t make his first album until he was 27 years old. I’m only 18 going on 19 in July; I have plenty of time to make an album. I would not be surprised if I held off putting my 2 CD’s off until I was 27 (laughs). You can’t rush music.
Other than your music, who else are you listening to?
I listen to a lot of artists. Too many to remember but Keyshia Cole is my favorite female artist. I listen to almost everyone in Cash Money. 2Pac of course, I listen to a lot of Pac. I listen to Whitney Houston sometimes because she is an artist who I grew up listening to aside from rap music. I try to keep my ears open to gospel music so I will listen to Yolanda Adams from time to time. Kirk Franklin is someone else I like to listen to. After gospel, I listen to a lot of Bay Area rappers. Clyde Carson is someone I have always liked listening to. San Quinn and Ya Boy are artists I like slapping from time to time. I listen to hell of music. In fact that’s all I do in my spare time is listen to music or write my own so there are way too many artists. Check my my-space page, I listed most of them on there. “Myspace.com/thakidcaâ€
Is the hyphy movement dead?
I don’t think it is dead because the radio stations will not allow that to happen; but the attention that the hyphy movement gets now has slowed down a lot since it started.
It seems like everybody rapping now days what sets you apart from the
rest?
Everyone knows how to rap, but everyone does not have a passion for it. I am in love with music, which a lot of rappers are not, which is why they fall off after they get the millions in money. Ask your self this. “Why do long term relationships not last sometimes?†The answer is because someone in the relationship is not in love with the other person. They love them person to death, but in order to make anything last a life time, you have to be dedicated and in love with it!!!
