Thunder, That’s the only way to describe him. A Thunderous Voice and Playing style is the way to describe “Big Daddy Funk,” a native New Yorker, Kevin was born in the Sugar Hill Section of Harlem and raised primarily in the Bronx.The son of a music teacher, Kevin began studying music on the piano at four years of age while in Germany. Upon his return to the United States, he continued off and on until age eleven when he switched to trumpet and played that instrument through high school. On weekends he taught brass and woodwinds to beginning students in the “Arts in the Bronx Community Program,” an “Inner-City” Youth Diversion and Cultural Enrichment Program funded through The New York City Board of Education. It was there that Kevin became a professional musician playing trumpet for a South Bronx Band called Stone Soul. Kevin was so impressed with the bass player from this band that he switched to Bass Guitar in 1970. Influenced by such greats as Larry Graham, Sly Stone, Bootsy Collins, Stanley Clarke and Billy Cox, he approached the instrument from a foundational perspective.The next choice was simple, Viet Nam or College. Kevin went to City College of New York long enough to get a student deferment, then packed up and went on the road.Having done sound engineering for the Naumberg Symphony Orchestra, and promotion and backstage security for the Mighty Commodores, Kevin now had insight into the machinations which must occur behind the scenes in order to succeed.With several years of experience performing with various groups, Kevin has now found a home with The Son Of Funk Buddha Gonzalez and Mutiny.
