The Ripple 2 2008

About Me

At the core of the entertainment industry, is the universal goal of commercial success. With economic pursuit, often time comes the price of artistic integrity. Few artists have attained fame and fortune while remaining true to their musical principles. Splash's ability to master the art of writing, entertaining and producing are evidence that he will soon be one of those rare and distinctive artists. Splash is unquestionably one of the most authentic and innovative rappers to emerge out of the North Carolina hip-hop scene.
Too few Carolina rappers develop their own unique style. Instead, many choose to imitate either their crunk counterparts in Atlanta or the gangsta? posturing of the New York and LA hip hop scenes. Born in Petersburg, Virginia, 23-year-old Cory "Splash Gzo" Guion first got hooked on hip-hop when at the age of four his mother and father took him to see the world premier of Krush Groove, while his Army father was stationed in Illishiem, Germany. In 1990, the "Golden Era of Hip Hop," his family moved back to the States and settled in New Bern, North Carolina. "People overseas appreciate the quintessential elements of hip-hop more than kids here," says Splash, about the time he spent in Germany and the love he developed for hip-hop while there.
Like so many of the hip-hop greats, Splash started writing rhymes and making beats at 14, but it wasn?t until 2000 while at Elizabeth City State University that he decided to take his music career seriously. He used numerous talent shows and countless emcee battles in NC and VA to sharpened his lyrical skills. Splash's crisp delivery, distinct voice, clever wordplay and lyricism, combined with his regular dude mentality caught the attention of Amp Truth Records' CEO Danya Perry. Looking to expand his existing management company into a record label, Perry signed Splash and enlisted the skills of the ubiquitous man in hip-hop currently, super-producer 9th Wonder of Little Brother, Destiny Child,Mary j. Blige and Jay-Z fame, to produce his debut album, The Ripple Effect. This versatile talent intends to claim rap music's center stage with ease. Splash's purpose is summed up in his autobiographical statement, "My style is real.
A lot of people try to stereotype me - 'You're underground.' 'You're street.' 'You're conscience.' But I'm like I'm just hip-hop. I'm an emcee."
