Deep Space Nine

About Me

Deep Space Nine ~
Conceived in 1991, shortly before Gene Roddenberry’s death, DS9 chronicles the events surrounding space station Deep Space 9, which is under the joint control of the United Federation of Planets and Bajor, a planet recently liberated from a long term Cardassian occupation. In the pilot, the station is moved to the recently discovered Bajoran wormhole, allowing access to the unexplored Gamma Quadrant. The station quickly becomes a cornerstone of interstellar trade and political activity.
The wormhole is inhabited by aliens who do not exist within normal space and time. To the religious people of Bajor, these are the Prophets and the wormhole itself is the long-prophesied Celestial Temple. Commander Benjamin Sisko, who discovers the wormhole with Jadzia Dax, is hailed as the Emissary of the Prophets, a spiritual role that makes him uneasy.
According to co-creator Berman, he and Piller had considered setting the new series on a colony planet, but they felt a space station would both appeal more to viewers and save money due to the high cost of on-location shooting for a "land-based" show. However, they were certain that they did not want the show to be set aboard a starship because Star Trek: The Next Generation was still in production at the time and, in Berman’s words, it "just seemed ridiculous to have two shows—two casts of characters—that were off going where no man has gone before."
After two years, the Dominion - a hierarchy of three separate species, the xenophobic Changelings, the diplomatic but shifty Vorta and genetically-bred soldiers, the Jem'Hadar - made their presence known. Seeing these new travelers coming through the wormhole as a threat to their power base, they decided to bring their version of order to the Alpha Quadrant... by conquering it. So began the war. At first fought covertly, then in plain sight, the war would soon drag each of their major powers in as their governments struggled against paranoia and shifting loyalties, thanks to Changeling infiltrators. This war wasn't for territory or power, it was for freedom.
DS9 was well received by critics, with TV Guide describing it as "the best acted, written, produced, and altogether finest" Star Trek series. However, some fans grew dissatisfied with the show’s generally darker themes and objected to the stationary setting. Some fans of the series call themselves "Niners", after a baseball team which appeared in the seventh-season episode "Take Me Out to the Holosuite".
The show is best remembered for its well-developed characters and its original, complex plots. The main writers, in addition to creators Berman and Piller, included Ronald D. Moore , Peter Allan Fields , Ira Steven Behr , Robert Hewitt Wolfe , Joe Menosky , René Echevarria . Richard Manning , and Hans Beimler .

You like your freedom, but can settle down if you happen to find the right person. Your lover is O'brien. Chances are, you like someone to go on adventures with and the Irish.

The Unwritten Rule

When no appropriate rule applies, make one up.[10]

Unofficial rules

The character of Quark proposed adding a 286th rule: "When Morn leaves, it's all over."[38]

The character of Neelix, while posing as the Ferengi Grand Proxy, told Arridor and Kol that the 299th rule was: "Whenever you exploit someone, it never hurts to thank them (that way it's easier to exploit them the next time)."[10]

A conversation between the characters of Nog and Jake Sisko implied the existence of a rule similar to: "Money is money, but females are better."[39]

Each of the rules below was quoted on-screen, but was not formally stated as being one of the Rules of Acquisition and/or was not numbered.

* When the messenger comes to appropriate your profits, kill the messenger.[10]

* Time, like latinum, is a highly limited commodity.[35]

* Exploitation begins at home.[10]

* Always inspect the merchandise before making a deal.[40]

* Respect is good, but latinum is better.[38]

Revised Rules for the Modern Ferengi

A revised list of rules was created by Grand Nagus Zek in the DS9 episode "Prophet Motive". After consulting a Bajoran orb, the Bajoran Prophets changed Zek, eliminating his greed and thirst for profit. Once Zek was restored to his normal self, the original rules were restored and all copies of the revised rules were to be destroyed.[9]

* 1. If they want their money back, give it to them.
* 10. Greed is dead.
* 21. Never place profit before friendship.
* 22. Latinum tarnishes, but family is forever.
* 23. Money can never replace dignity.
* 285. A good deed is its own reward.

Stages of Acquisition

In addition to the Rules, Ferengi recognize five Stages of Acquisition:

1. Infatuation
2. Justification
3. Appropriation
4. Obsession
5. Resale
