bad natalie

if i had a heart, you'd break it.

About Me

i'm a concept, not a machine.
i am truly in love with my daughter, Ella [which, if you know my theories on love, is a huge admission and demonstration of my deep affection]. she's somehow nearing her third birthday, with the sweetest face and a personality to match. she started preschool and is seriously at the top of her little class. she looks nothing like me but exhibits my sass. and my walk.
i share my life with my best friend, my business partner, and my worst enemy. we've been entangled since the paleolithic era.
i adore education. i'm home to my beloved stomping grounds for my master's degree in crisis communication. after i achieve my degree, i'm aiming to NGO it up and, you know, save the world.
i have been irrevocably changed by Steve Hough's death. i didn't know him very well, just enough to like him, but his senseless passing shocked me to my core. it is because of him and the immediate aftermath of his tragic death that i've crystallized my life and career path.
i run stuff: my house with an iron first; publicity and events for the nonprofit Calmer House Gallery ; events and communications for the 200-person strong PR Alumni Association ; my better half's fledgling photography career ; research projects.
and i'm for hire.
also, i am anti-nationalist, pro-peace, an equalist, a girl without a country, an idealist tempered with realism, unpatriotic, and a loudmouth. it should be noted that i am a serial polyamorist.
i'm an amateur stargazer. i own a telescope that's about the size of me. i have seen many heavenly bodies and i wish i had more time.
i run miles: about 4, to be exact. almost everyday. it's less of a regimen, more of a lithium.
i'm a closet linguist and outed bibliophile.
[to stay informed to my reading choices, look no further than my 'books' selection. i list my current book and the last two i've read with a few words. if you'd like to talk about them, email me.]
i totally talk like a surfer dude and act like an irrepressible yahoo.
i'm slowly moving away from the grubby punk rocker persona i've cultivated since graduating catholic junior high. while i don't think i'm qualified to be considered respectable yet, my clothes are clean and matching more often than before. even still, i don't dress to impress. i don't even look pretty. that's not who i am. i'll win you over with my big, sexy brain.

oh, yeah. i'm a writer. it's my second nature and if i ever crack my guts open, i have a novel or 10 i'd like for everyone to read. if we've met, you're probably a character in something.

My Interests

ella!, thinking, reading books that make impressions, watching movies that spark thought and conversation, people, tattoos, punk rock, learning, talking about everything, nonprofits, p motherfucking r, random dorkiness, traveling, angry arguments that mean nothing in the long term, managing people, events, and the aftermath, writing, making lists, karass determination (i think i have it now, i really do!), illusions of grandeur, boozin' it up and being an ass, governmental reform/revolution, creating awareness, giving back, journalism, coffee!, eating amazing food: not limited to thai, middle eastern, greek, italian, polish etc, etc, improving this country, becoming multilingual, increasing my vocabulary, identifying rhetorical canons and then talking about them, swinging on swings, debating, and of course, music.

I'd like to meet:

other troublemakers, jerks with hearts of gold, ur-mothers, rabblerousers, creative types, dissidents, avid spellers, punk rockers, intellectuals, sxers, politicos, hard drinkers and hard livers.
and another adventurer:

Music:

ani d, the clash, the sex pistols, desmond dekker, the cramps, the cure, the decemberists, minor threat, misfits (old and new school), 50s ballads, lower class brats, almost anything i hear on npr, tiger army, ministry, fear, skrewdriver, reel big fish, the last resort, gang green, the reverend horton heat, madness, crass, mad cadddies, slaughter and the dogs, the english beat, subhumans, the pogues, jimmy dean, kmfdm, johnny cash, toots and the maytals, dead kennedys, vice squad, the tossers, the ramones, gang of four, the specials, the queers, flogging molly, revolting cocks, social distortion, darkest of the hillside thickets, bad brains, dropkick murphys, the selecter, op ivy, early rancid, dubliners, skatalites, the oppressed, pietasters, 4skins, sublime, type o negative, deals gone bad, catch 22, older no doubt, violent femmes, talking heads, nin, depeche mode, bright eyes, oxymoron, rocket from the crypt, the slits, cock sparrer, the adicts, the exploited, fugazi, wax trax, and circle jerks, for starters.

Movies:

forgetting sarah marshall, no country for old men, casino, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, rushmore, gia, stand by me, fear and loathing in las vegas, princess bride, dr strangelove, the crow, kill bill series, labyrinth, return of the living dead, tank girl, pulp fiction, dawn of the dead, day of the dead, love song for bobby long, bottlerocket, boondock saints, run lola run, punk rockumentaries, where the buffalo roam, hackers, clockwork orange, starship troopers, the count of monte cristo, johnny depp movies, the royal tannenbaums, shawn of the dead, i heart huckabees, the shining, reservoir dogs, the fountain, america's sweethearts, edward scissorhands, random horror movies, harry potter series, documentaries about anything, zombie films, and full metal jacket.

Television:

i loathe television. and the american culture it perpetuates.

Books:

there's too many to list...let's just categorize me as a voracious reader; everything from biographies to trash fiction to satire to science fiction to case studies to rhetoric to government to graphic novels to horror to philosophy to nonfiction to to social commentaries to media studies to new york times best sellers to feminism...pick any topic and i'm sure i'll have an opinion.
i am still totally reading 'guns...' but i needed an escapist, fiction break. i'm halfway through 'amber and blood' by margaret weis. it's the latest in the dragonlance series, covering the exploits of the gods and humans and, of course, kender. it's not her best work, but it's still a decent vacation.
'guns, germs and steel: fates of human societies' by jared diamond. it's a fascinating overview of human societies' beginnings and ending that makes you take a long hard look at the heroes of our time and how this world has come to pass. it's phenomenal.
'intercourse: stories' by robert olen butler. short inner monologues of famous couples during acts of passion. my personal favorites: richard nixon and his wife; adam and eve.

Heroes:

they're all dust, anyhow.
