About Me

I like to play music, kayak, mountain bike, photography, and practice Buddhism. Electric bass is my main instrument and guitar my second. I play jazz, fusion, funk, rock, prog, ethnic, and covers. I co-lead the jazz fusion band Ley Lynes, write solo bass songs, teach bass privately, moderate the MySpace group Da Bass - Q & A for the Electric Bass , and I'm always working on some new project with friends. You can listen to some of my tunes, check out my online lessons, and look at some of my pics at MikeShawOnBass.com . Other than music I also study Tibetan Buddhism through the FPMT and Kurukulla Buddhist Center and have spent some time studying martial/healing arts...This profile was edited with Thomas' myspace editor™ V2.5

Music:

I play and listen to Jazz, Fusion, Funk, Soul, Ethnic, Rock, Prog, Metal, Goth, and Industrial. Jazz/Fusion and Prog Metal are probably what I listen to the most though. Some bands and musicians I listen to are Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Victor Wooten Band, John Patitucci, Marcus Miller, Jaco, Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dream Theater, Symphony X, KMFDM, Kamelot, Conception, Lacuna Coil, Rammstein, Vanden Plas, Kings X, Gypsy Kings, Queen, James Brown, and a ton more! I'm constantly downloading new music so this list could be endless. I also love the Beyond Jazz and Real Jazz channels on XM Radio.

BTW, if you like the music playing check out my Ley Lynes friend below. This is the fusion band that I co-lead with guitarist and good friend George Stavropoulos.

Just got back into these guys. Jamiroquai!

The video below is The Haunting by the band Kamelot (I know, a silly band name, lol). The singer Roy Kahn is one of the best metal singers I have ever heard. On par with Geoff Tate! If you like it make sure to listen to the CD version of the song. Unfortunately the guitar solo and prechorus section are completely removed from this video. It clearly makes the video more pop than progressive so keep that in mind. (make sure to stop Senorita before you watch the video)

Here is a somewhat newer song from Dream Theater. One of my favorite ballads. Some edits but not too bad.

This is a pretty old Dream Theater song. I love their commentary on this video. They just give each other crap about their silly clothes and hair, lol. At any rate this song is excellent though quite different from their newer stuff. Unfortunately it is heavily edited taking several minutes off the song. Lots of the cool transitions between parts are missing so it makes the song sound a little detached (like the Kamelot tune) so download the full song if you like it.

This is Lacuna Coil my fav female fronted band. This girl can sing!

Movies:

Favorite movies are Seven Years in Tibet, Kundun, House of Flying Daggers, Crouching Tiger, Bullet Proof Monk, The Last Samauri, Godfathers, Interview with a Vampire, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Willy Wonka (the original is my top fav movie), Blow, Zoolander, Anchor Man, Elf, and many more.

Television:

Only the news in the morning. Way too many books to catch up on and Netflix is great for movies.

Books:

Recently: Many books on the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Buddhism as part of the FPMT program, books on Taoism (The Truth of Tao was great), Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons (my fav), many books on internal martial arts and healing, bio of Jaco Pastorius, bio of Miles Davis, and bio of Charles Mingus. I'm always reading something new.

Heroes:

I admire lots of great people that have pushed the limits of what they do including Victor Wooten (funk bassist), John Patitucci (jazz bassist), John Petrucci (Dream Theater's guitarist), Larry Graham (funk bassist), Al Di Meola (jazz guitarist), Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Lama Yeshe, Geshe Tsulga, and the Dalai Lama. The list could go on and on.
