About Me

Some fun facts about 91.7 FM WXCI...
  • 91.7 WXCI is a student run college radio station located on the mid-town campus of Western Connecticut State University. Since our inception in 1973, WXCI has remained the second largest college station in Connecticut, pumping 3000 watts of power through our transmitter. We don't discriminate. You can hear music from all genres at any time of day... hiphop, metal, indie-rock, americana, classic rock, jazz, punk, reggae, techno, folk, dance, experimental, industrial, hardcore, alt-rock, avant-garde, power-pop, funk, electroclash, country, ambient, ska, grindcore, bluegrass, electronica, psychadelic, British invasion, elevator music, blackmetal, drum and bass... pretty much anything that's considered music. We also have several topical weekly talk shows, including Sports Jam and WestConn Happenings. Also on weekends, we continue to broadcast at all of WCSU's sports events in Danbury, including football, basketball, and hockey games. Since August of 2004, our highly advanced state-of-the-art DJ-ing computer (A.K.A. "Super-Computer") has been helping us out, spinning between DJ airshifts, making it possible for us to broadcast 24 hours a day. Super-Computer also helps promote some of our specialty shows, and plays several informative Pubilc Service Announcements. The one downside to Super-Computer is that he's very shy, and this has lead to many listeners wondering about all the music he's been playing, since he doesn't say the names of the songs or artists. We are working on fixing this problem. In the meantime, listeners can feel free to contact WXCI while human DJ's are on the air, and we'll help as best as we can. Afterall, WXCI is a station by music fans, for music fans.Request Line: 203-837-9924 AOL SCREEN NAME: WXCIDJ WXCI's Official Specialty Shows: Third Stone From The Sun (Classic Rock) - Sundays, Noon - 3PM Club Dub (Hiphop) - Sundays, 3PM - 6PM The Punk Show: Brain Removal (Punk) - Sundays, 6PM - 9PM Hard Attack (Metal) - Sundays, 9PM - Midnight Sub Rosa Party (Local music, Live studio performances) - Mondays, 5:30PM - 7PM Reel-To-Reel (60's, 70's, Pop) - Mondays, 8PM - 11PM Strange Brew (Prog, Garage) - Mondays, 11PM - 1AM Shout Brother Shout (Americana) - Tuesdays, 6PM - 9PM Folk The System (Psych, Folk, Indie) - Tuesdays, 9PM - Midnight WestConn Happenings (Public Service) - Thursdays, 3PM - 4PM Critical Beatdown (Hiphop, Jazz, Funk) - Thursdays, 7PM - 9PM 80's Spectrum (80's, New Wave) - Thursdays, 9PM - 11PM Sports Jam (Sports Talk) - Fridays, 3PM - 5PM Raw Rotations (Hiphop) - Fridays, 11PM - 3AM 3 O'Clock Road Block (Reggae) - Saturdays, 3PM-4PM Laugh Riot Radio (Stand-Up Comedy) - Saturdays, 8PM - 8:30PM Adventures In Jazz (Jazz) - Saturdays, 8:30PM - Midnight
  • (from wikipedia): The college radio station is WXCI, 91.7 FM, obtained its FCC license to operate on 28 February 1973. Initially transmitting at 10 watts of power, WXCI upgraded to 760 watts in 1978. In 1982, WXCI was one of the first FM stations to focus on alternative rock, a format now common among US college radio stations. As one of a handful of stations playing alternative rock in the US in the early 1980s, WXCI helped popularize new bands such as U2, Culture Club, Duran Duran, and Black Flag.
WXCI broadcasts to Connecticut and New York at 3,000 watts with a stereo transmitter on WCSU's Westside Campus. It also streams its broadcasts on the Web.
