*** NEWSLETTER / REVIEW THE FLY ***
If you want to know how the recordings went and what happens next, then there is this newsletter that you can click on. Finest hand-writing included.
Last tuesday we played at THE FLY and one of our guests, Charlie Southwell, gave us this review:
The Budda Cakes suffered with three quarters of the crowd leaving before their set began, but nonetheless set to work winning over the remaining members of the crowd. A folk-esque crooner that plays a sea shanty sounding organ and a gentle, bell like, mini piano, fronts this band. Accompanied by a grungy drummer and bassist, that complete this odd sounding trio, they hold together the mix of sounds well and are attention grabbing from the start. A friend of the band joins them onstage holding a homemade sign donning the band moniker. A crazy mix of the bizarre and slightly odd, Budda Cakes certainly are contenders to occupy the spot of most diverse band I've seen. Whilst sounding vaguely familiar they manage to hide away from almost all reference points. The closest of whom I can possibly offer it The Dresden Dolls, due to the theatric intent and the sense of observing something overwhelmingly strange. A very well done cover of Monty Pythons 'Every Sperm is Sacred' was extraordinarily memorable, whilst a cover of Robots In Disguise's 'Sex Made Me Stupid' highlights their enthusiastic manner in what is new and trendy, yet changing it spectacularly in their take on the electro tune, created yet another highlight . Performing a more 'acoustic' number sat on the floor in the middle of the ten or so remaining people. During the sets finale, the friend that had been holding the sign, dropped it and started peeling and cutting up an onion and throwing it on the stage and out onto the floor in front of it, the band could be forgiven for being crazy, but do play on more senses than most bands do. So even if they hadn't pulled at your emotions, you may well end up crying if you go see this band live, although of no real significance to the song, is a talking point for the journey home.

***Ally Injured By Onion***
It was a great night with an interesting line-up at The Fly...as Lord Pearse called it: "the European Connection". We've played a new song, Jon Von Pic took new pics and Mike, our Song-Reflector, was in new top-form. Throwing fresh-cut juicy onion-slices into the audience, he hit Ally (regular cakes customer) in the eye and knocked her out. Thanx to our reflector's restless activity people were also hit by frequent water-pistol-shots, flying bananas, and the managent told us to clean the floor after the show. Anarchy at The Fly! Also: Gloomy, the violent blood bear, was playing Casio on one song! Did he kill one of you afterwards? Please send me a message and we'll sort something out.
I hope you have enjoyed it as much as we did... thanx to everybody who came down that night!

Colors. That's the first thing that comes into my mind when I think of yesterday night. Everybody was sitting on the floor, creating things, painting pictures and watching live bands. When Mike was peeling his onion on stage it didn't seem as strange as usually, just because of the environment. Someone was taking photos, they'll be up in a while!

***Last Night @ Enterprise
" I am a bit hung-over or sick, but in a positive way! Last night felt like a birthday party. I was really amazed that so many people had turned up. Some hours before I was afraid noone would come. We were changing the setlist a bit to make it more unpredictable for ourselves and you. At least one of you (Mr. Matthias !!!) should have recognized the chorus of "Crystal In The Shadow" that came up in "Enemy". We're not playing this song live yet, but you can find it as a video on youtube. And have you noticed Pearse, the man who was selling you the tickets? ...He was the first one in London who has ever booked The Budda Cakes. He did the same with Kate Nash (!!!) a year ago. Next time give him a wet kiss!
Next wednesday we do a gig in East London...a night called Wungamunga. Last time they had people painting on pillows and then having a massive pillow-fight. Sounds fun, maybe see you there :) "

Gosh, I just realized it's Friday the 13th....Anyway: Thanx so much to everybody who has made their way down to Camden last night! For some of you it was a kinda long trip as you don't live around the corner but it was so good to see all your sweaty faces in front of the stage! I hope you have enjoyed it as well as The Budda Cakes, and we'll see you again at the BARFLY B*SIDES @ENTERPRISE (Camden) on the 7th of AUGUST. Pearse, the promoter is a friend of mine, so if we can create a huge crowd that night he will be extremely happy...furthermore the next step will be the bigger Barfly then, hopefully:). "The Budda Cakes was one of the most interesting shows we have had on one of our nights. Picture a nordic guy dressed in black and white with specks of red paint all over his white shirt and sat behind a desk with some very ingenious stage props. THE BUDDA CAKES: Episode 2 :
Alright, this is Episode three of the one and only Video Diary "The Budda Cakes". I think we should make a pilot to explain you the whole situation and how everything started...But until then you can enjoy this un-commented David Lynchy botch of sequences.
The girl's name is Nora, she is a good friend a we have met a month ago. I have convinced her to move into my squat..so i am not alone there anymore. Maybe you've seen it in Episode 1..it's a huge old college with loads of space, dark rooms and strange noises at night:) I am not talking about me having sex with a girl there. The other girl at the end...well, this is Zari. I was making out with her, she made the first step...but she deserves to be mentioned here because after this day she refused answering my calls and myspace messages...Not my fault, honestly, I was behaving like a normal person.
So be careful when you meet her...don't fall in love!!! It will only hurt you!!!
Furthermore you see Dee from Robots in Disguise in private. I was introduced to her by a girl i had met at the arts club gig. We went to the Client concert and there i met Dee. Afterwards we went for a drink. There is also a bit Client Live footage in this Episode...with an amazing sound...You might wonder who is this guy who is imitating a squirrel in the beginning and middle of the clip! he's the legendary Glue-Man!!! He is a good company when I am flyering for Metro in Tottenham Court Road every thursday. His name is Glue-Man because he's holding a glue-pot under his jacket and smells on it as often as possible. He is a nice chap though! This night i spent two hours besides him and felt really dizzy then!
Something I forgot ??? Maybe this: the hill with the sunset is Hampstead Heath! They shot a sequence of "Monthy Python and the holy grail" there. It's quiet and really relaxing. Not many people around! If you're a tourist visiting London don't go there please!
This is it!
Tune in next wednesday for Episode 4!!!!

*** GON ARRESTED BY LONDON POLICE***
Now he talks!
"I was on my way to Earl's Court, using the tube. It was 1pm. Two days ago I had found an oyster card and because I am not very rich at the mo I was using it. I arrived at Earl's Court and wanted to leave the station, when I saw at least 10 policemen waiting at the gates. It looked like one of these general actions they do in London to waste money and time. I got stopped by a tube worker, he wanted to see my ticket. Of course, I look a bit suspicious in my bumble bee costume! When he realised that the card owner, "Mrs. Jane Allisson", can't impossibly be me, he called two police officers.
I explained to them how I had found the card two days ago. Then one officer mumbled something like "theft by finding" ( and I had to laugh), then he started searching me.
I am a bit messy so I have lots of things in my pockets. He found a nail and a mini screwdriver and asked me what this was for. Well, to hang up a picture at home or to screw something into the wall. But NO, you can commit a crime with that and it's not allowed to carry it! Terrorist!!! Yeah, of course, just last week someone in Hackney was stabbed to death by a mini- screwdriver! And one nail makes an excellent nail-bomb when i throw it!
This was enough and eventually they were calling a Van to 'collect me'.
Inside the van they put me in handcuffs, which was really good, otherwise I could have scratched my nose. At the police station they put me in a cell with a loo and a bed. All inclusive. I looked at the ceiling and there was a writing like ' Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Ask us for help with drug problems'. I dind't ask. After a while someone came and led me out. We were going to another room where they took my fingerprints, my DNA (!!!) and the classic police pictures! The atmosphere was a bit like being at the doctor's, they were joking and easygoing.
They brought me back to my cell, took me out again and questioned me, recording everyting on tape. They were having these 30min Tapes that i need for my shows and don't know where to get them. But they couldn't tell me the answer...
Anyway, at 7 they let me go. The officers were kind of friendly during the whole procedure and they were good buddies as well. Before the interview started one said the the other ' oh, you have really dry lips!'. ' Really?' the other answered and took out his Vaseline to solve the problem.
What I just wanna say is: NeoEX forever !!!

MR. CLARKE's DEATH
A few weeks ago our friend and manager Martin Clarke died. He was one of the nicest guys in London and we met in January through his Publishing Company "Valentine Music". Martin Clarke was someone who really believed in The Budda Cakes and tried to get us a record deal. He became a friend too and called every day. On one hand to tell us the news about big record labels which were too scared to sign The Budda Cakes, on the other hand just to ask how we are and to tell some of his old-fashioned jokes...
In the 65 years of his life he made history... he established the first Rock'n'Roll Label in Australia in the 50's when he was a kid. "Clarion Records". He did everything on his own. He produced the artists and cut the vinyl and in the following years Martin received lots of Golden Records. In 2004 he became a member of "The Hall Of Fame" in Australia.
I tried to call him, he didn't answer so I called the company. John said "We have sad news, Martin has died, he had a heartattack". We went to his funeral and I met a guy he was working with. He had spoken to Martin before. Martin had had told him that he was in the middle of a record deal for us. Probably a surprise. This is for him.

Reviews "The Budda Cakes EP"
The Budda Cakes EP was recorded between October and December 2005 and features the following tracks:
Unnecessary / In My Arms / Erections / Always / Silence
"This debut EP has to be one of the most unusual pieces of work I've come across recently. The Budda Cakes EP is a brilliant piece of work. I admire these guys for having the guts to lay down such a varied exhibition of contemporary music
as inventive and as fresh as it gets.
Superb!!"
Peter Brown/
www.toxicpete.co.uk
The Budda Cakes' hands would be more usefully employed behind a McDonalds counter.
www.ptjsm.karoo.net
"The Budda Cakes release their debut EP and what an eclectic mix it is. Apparently recording their album by candlelight to capture an essence like no other album has done, The Budda Cakes have made sure this certainly shines through in their music...
The Budda Cakes are quite unique from everybody else.
Nat Geraghty/
www.glasswerk.co.uk
This is a pretty teeth-grating listen.
www.ptjsm.karoo.net
"The debut three track release from London three piece The Budda Cakes combines more creative artistry and freewheeling melodic depth than a fair few bands currently receiving accolades and plaudits.
They appear to have an uncanny knack at shitting tunes at will...each of these five tunes reveal a different facet of the ensembles creativity."
Mark Barton/
www.losingtoday.com
Magnificently awful. A bizarre mish-mash of indie grunge and something else that I can't quite put my finger on.
I have sometimes sat around and pondered that it is quite hard to come up with a good band name. They probably think it is exceptionally easy to come up with a good band name. If they didn't, then they wouldn't have selected a monicker so perfectly bad as... The Budda Cakes.
www.collective-zine.co.uk
" Jaggy and snaggy, finger-snapping fresh I have a sneaky feeling that you might hear more about this lot "
Shane O Leary/

REVIEWS "THE BUDDA CAKES EP" 2006:
"This debut EP has to be one of the most unusual pieces of work I've come across recently. The Budda Cakes EP is a brilliant piece of work. I admire these guys for having the guts to lay down such a varied exhibition of contemporary music ...
as inventive and as fresh as it gets.
Superb!!"
Peter Brown / TOXICPETE
The Budda Cakes' hands would be more usefully employed behind a McDonalds counter.

"The Budda Cakes release their debut EP and what an eclectic mix it is. Apparently recording their album by candlelight to capture an essence like no other album has done, The Budda Cakes have made sure this certainly shines through in their music...The Budda Cakes are quite unique from everybody else.
Nat Geraghty / GLASSWERK
This is a pretty teeth-grating listen.

Mark Barton / LOSING TODAY
Magnificently awful. A bizarre mish-mash of indie grunge and something else that I can't quite put my finger on.
I have sometimes sat around and pondered that it is quite hard to come up with a good band name. They probably think it is exceptionally easy to come up with a good band name. If they didn't, then they wouldn't have selected a monicker so perfectly bad as... The Budda Cakes.

" Jaggy and snaggy, finger-snapping fresh I have a sneaky feeling that you might hear more about this lot "
Shane O Leary / UNPEELED
Blimey! Certainly an assault on the sense!

...they ARE brilliant! Thank god for that. Marvellous...It's been quite a trip by the time the last note rings out, and one which is going to keep you interested for ages. Until it pops into existence, we can only predict the madness that would come with a full length album.
