About Me

"The wreckage of a hero
Lies broken in the corner
And everyone pretends
They like to live that way"
*Hello I am Laura.
*I am 1 of 6 billion other human beings.
*Like many people I wear shoes, eat tomatoes, and get the occasional bout of hiccups.
*I'm doing Physics, Chemistry, Maths and English Language for A Level and later I think I want to study Language, Linguistics & Phonetics, hopefully at UCL.
*Fortunately, I was brought up on a nutritious diet of Bob Dylan, Syd Barrett and Captain Beefheart rather than The Spice Girls. Thanks Dad, I appreciate it.
*I am aware that I have the music taste of a middle aged man.
*And I'm proud of it, so shh.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

"My physique was inadequate, so I became a dreamer."

--------------------------------------------------------

Music:

*My favourite song of all time is Visions Of Johanna by Bob Dylan; it is so beautiful and it gives me shivers.

my top 10 bands/musicians:
Robyn Hitchcock (and any band he has played in like The Soft Boys ) - for the fact that I can't think how to say how brilliant or inspiring he is. He is an absolute genius. The first time I properly saw him play I was completely blown away; I have nothing but total respect and admiration for him and his music.
~ ~ ~
The Fall - for being crunchy and gritty, nasty and horrible, and for being the group that always makes my mum go "TURN IT DOWN" whenever I play their music.
~ ~ ~
Syd Barrett - for being such a complete legend and a massive inspiration. My life would not be the same without him and his beautiful tunes. RIP.
~ ~ ~
Bob Dylan - for having "soul and a good heart of gold, so he sings about war and the cold".
~ ~ ~
The Beatles (but only really from Revolver onwards) - come on. It's the BEATLES. End of.
~ ~ ~
Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band - for sounding a bit mental. Absolute genius.
~ ~ ~
Velvet Underground - for their sonic terrorism, massive influence and arty rock 'n' roll.
~ ~ ~
John Cale - for being so influential, original, and experimental. And also just plain noisy. And he put me in his top friends. LOL.
~ ~ ~
Neil Young - for having two wonderful sides to his music: beautiful rootsy acoustic folk, and psychotic blazing electric brutality.
~ ~ ~
The Byrds - for being all jangly and chiming and lovely.

I also rather like: The Band, Nick Drake, Talking Heads, Wire, Bert Jansch, Patti Smith, Julian Cope, Arcade Fire, Monochrome Set, Kevin Ayers, Fleetwood Mac, Steeleye Span, Love, PJ Harvey, The Kinks, Richard Thompson, Yo La Tengo, Gary Numan, Soft Machine, Lou Reed, Seasick Steve, David Byrne, Big Star, Joy Division, Graham Coxon, Jesse Malin, Anton Barbeau, Echo & The Bunnymen, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, blah blah blah....

Movies:

old hitchcock films. dont even TRY and do a remake of them. they must not be tampered with. alright?

Television:

Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 - Very recent single "Adventure Rocketship"

Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians, back in the day with "So You Think You're In Love". Bless.

Books:

~ ~ ~
"Child-Inheritor of the spring breezes that blow in from the jarl forests and of the autumn misery in petal, scale, and wing. Winter's white brilliance on a thousand turrets and summer's torpor among walls that crumble - listen. Listen with the humility of princes and understand with the understanding of ants. Listen, Child-Inheritor, and wonder. Digest what I now say."
"Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming. This is a fault. Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For them, there is hope. They are the elect to whom beautiful things mean only Beauty."
"Every single morning I wake with a bang. It's as though the fact that I am alive is injected into me; I am a character in a fairy tale, bursting with life. For who are we? Can you tell me that? We are thrown together with a sprinkling of stardust. But what's that? Where the hell does this world come from?"
"The alcohol smell is on my fingers, cold and remote, piercing, like a steel pin going in. It smells like white enamel basins. When I look up at the stars in the night-time, cold and white and sharp, I think they must smell like that."

Currently reading: Life Of Pi by Yann Martel

Heroes:

Salvador Dali - "The difference between a madman and myself is that I am not mad"

Syd Barrett - "Is pop music an art form? I suppose it is, as much as sitting down is..."

Bob Dylan - "he's a poet, don't you know it? And the wind you can blow it. He's Mr Dylan the King and he's free as a bird on the wing."
I named my cat after this man.

Robyn Hitchcock - My #1 hero of all time. I go through obsessive phases of listening to nothing else except for his music for weeks and never get bored of it. He wears well good shirts. He is insanely imaginative and writes the most genius songs and lyrics I've ever heard. He tells the best anecdotes at gigs and he could not be funnier or more brilliant if he tried.
Basically, I think he's a bit fab.

please help!

Robyn Hitchcock had his lovely guitar stolen out of his tour van in Toronto recently. It is a Fender American Standard Telecaster, serial (x)13939732. The colour is a sky blue type thing.  Please...
