About Me

I look at people living on the wild side and think I'm totally boring by comparison, but many people who know me label me solidly as a wild child. I guess it's just a matter of perspective. I adore cats in general and mine in particular. Animals period are WAY better than most humans on the planet, in my opinion--I have a bit of a misanthropic streak and am very introverted, which manifests itself in lots and lots of reading and writing--I've been a bookworm all my life. I like darkness, in what I read and what I do, but sometimes a happy bright pink feeling slithers in and temporarily takes over. Meeting my awesome husband brought out the geek in me, and I can be found at bi-mon-sci-fi-cons when time and money permits, wherever I can go. I am a huge roller derby fan and am deliriously happy to be a member of the new rec league in Indy, the Circle City Socialites! I am obsessed with traveling, and love to see places I've never been before. I hate conservatism, ignorance, Republicans, Democrats (just a little less than the GOP), anyone with a small mind--I cannot tolerate intolerance. Great music, fun with my close friends, and last-minute road trips to anywhere because there's a con or concert or reading or festival or derby bout that I MUST go to, are some of my favorite things.

My Interests

Cats (my cats rule my world), my niece (she rules with my cats--sort of a co-ruling thing), roller derby, reading weird stuff, finding out of the way and strange stores (especially bookstores) when on vacation--I'm not much into hitting tourist traps (although it happens), traveling when I can, libraries, general geekiness, trying to find an outlet for my activist yearnings, Bob and Tom, laughing (love comedies more than anything), reading magazines (especially Bust, Bitch and Ms.), writing (I've written several short stories and a novel, which I've done nothing with since I completed it). Love zines and read all kinds, from political to how-to to perzines. Always looking for bookstores/infoshops that carry them, which generally works out because those stores have the best books. :)

Music:

Bauhaus, My Chemical Romance, Smashing Pumpkins, Peter Murphy, Morrissey, the Smiths, Indigo Girls, Mindless Self Indulgence, A Perfect Circle, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Sophie B. Hawkins, Violent Femmes, Dresden Dolls, the Cure, Tori Amos, Louis XIV, Love and Rockets, Beck, Pink Floyd, Joan Jett, Queen, White Stripes, Stevie Nicks, Marilyn Manson, Village People, They Might Be Giants

Movies:

Jaws, Lord of the Rings trilogy (I saw Return of the King at the theater nine times, to say nothing of how often I've sat my ass in front of the TV for them), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Star Wars (even the prequels--uptight fanboys can deal), all the Harry Potter movies, Fight Club, Cabin Fever, The Matrix, The Exorcist, Legion: Exorcist III, Bachelor Party, Pulp Fiction, Grindhouse (especially Death Proof), I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Saw movies (any of the new extra-gory horror films in general--Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, Hostel, etc.), Legally Blonde, Tim Burton's first Batman, Batman Returns, V for Vendetta, Speed Racer (!), Brokeback Mountain, 50 First Dates, Happy Gilmore, nearly anything with Johnny Depp, Napoleon Dynamite (after I watched it more than once), Better Off Dead, Seven, The Blues Brothers, Halloween (the first one and the rest of the series, too--and most other slasher flicks), The Crow, The Ninth Gate (Johnny Depp, rare books, and the occult--that's almost too much for me), Fahrenheit 9/11, Pitch Black. MOST DISLIKED MOVIES: Legends of the Fall, House of 1000 Corpses, The Beach (paid money for this one because I somehow, against my better judgment, got sucked into the whole Leo/Titanic thing ... he owes me ...), Rob Zombie's Halloween (don't get me started)

Television:

The Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle, South Park, Family Guy, American Dad, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, various true crime shows on the Discovery Channel and TLC, Forensic Files and Body of Evidence on Court TV (Dayle Hinman RULES!), some stuff on The History Channel, and nearly any nostalgia/top 100 show they have on VH-1, Maximum Exposure

Books:

My, where to start--I read a lot. Best book of all time: FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS (HST--Best. Writer. Ever.). Other than that: Poppy Z. Brite, Leslie Stella, Jennifer Belle, William Peter Blatty, Laurie Notaro, Terry Pratchett, Ayun Halliday, Chuck Palahniuk, Ariel Gore, Pagan Kennedy, Michael Moore, Al Franken, T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Nicholas Basbanes. Harry Potter and the [fill in the blank with any seven of the titles]. Also The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death/SB and the Baconburg Horror by Daniel Pinkwater--love them as much now as I did in high school. I read a lot of feminist/cultural studies books, stuff on true crime and serial killers, books about books (history of books, history of bookstores, book collecting, libraries, etc), books about San Francisco. Also graphic novels and comics, primarily undergrounds, but any of an alternative, feminist, or leftist bent.

Heroes:

Gloria Steinem, Andrea Dworkin, Hunter S. Thompson, Lois Wilkerson, Stephen Colbert, Marge Simpson, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Nancy Hodges, Seth MacFarlane, Dayle Hinman

Several years ago I went through a serious hockey phase. My friend Sarah lived in Indy while I was slogging away at school in Muncie, and after the owner of the company she worked at bought the I...

have you seen grindhouse? No? then DO IT NOW

That's partly serious, by the way. Considering that the world wasn't ready for Grindhouse, the numbers are low, and chances are if you don't run out--this second--you will miss it on the big screen. I...

Way back at the beginning of this blog, I talked about creative projects that I was putting off or otherwise procrastinating on. A novel idea, a graphic novel idea, a memorial of some kind for my pas...
