Taking the first step, the putting pen to paper my thoughts, my fears, my desires, my secrets, my views and then creating the melody and taking it to the final stages of production until I was completely satisfied was the easiest part. Taking the second step, however, was a lot more daunting. By putting my music “out thereâ€, I was in effect exposing myself to an industry I knew nothing about, without a manager or at that time even an agent.
But with naive confidence, trial and many errors, a lot of ambition and sheer bloody mindedness I have managed to silence most of my critics and confirm the beliefs of all the people who have shown me support, and believed in me and my goal. From close friends and family to everyone who has ever bought my promo album, downloaded one of my tracks, added one of my songs, videos or links to their websites/homepages and generally anyone who has spread the word, all have helped me get to where I am now.
I can honestly say the responses I have to my music and promo videos have been sometimes, much to my surprise, fairly extreme, from people loving my work to people hating it with such venom that they have even gone out of their way to send me hate mail.
Luckily, controversy has always been a mental turn on for me…and I relish causing a reaction…that is exactly what art/music is meant to do.G0d forbid my albums ever become cds for background music at dinner parties.
I am an 80s/90s child so subconsciously a big influence has come from those fabulous decades, which is why I would probably have to, if push came to shove, describe my music as a mixture of Madonna travelling to the East and meeting up with Pet Shop Boys on the way.
Saying that, I never limit my self to any one type of genre, believing that the more you limit your self the less able you are to be free to create. For example as a result of not limiting or restricting my self, I did a totally camp disco track called “Dead as Disco†that I love and has proven to be very popular.
It would be a hard task to put my music in to a particular category or to box me up in to a nice little package, as my musical taste and inspiration is far too eclectic, and although I am inspired by certain artists and songs and imagery, I draw the line as an artist myself of imitating them or trying to become a clone of them in any way.( I think that would take away the role of the talent show contestants we are forced to watch and listen to these days)
My next step is to finish my official debut album “Little Bird†I’m currently in the studio working with some really great producers taking my time and making sure I’m completely happy with each track. You will not see the dreaded album filler or the dreary ballad on my album that’s for sure! I’m here to make an impact, not a quick buck.
My songs are from me, not a song writing team or a svengali type manager forcing me to make tunes against my will, Each track is a reflection of a period of my life, a thought, a view, a feeling…
And “Little Bird†has a range of songs from dance floor fillers to slower darker tunes. From sexual Arabian-esque tracks to Hip-hop beat driven songs.
I’m also currently in talks with some music video directors and crews on shooting my first official music video. Although I’m very proud of my promo videos I have done and edited my self with a budget of never more than a hundred pounds, and realise because of them I have gained a lot more recognition and gained an understanding of what I would like to achieve as not only a singer song writer but very much a visual artist too, I feel its time to take the next step and as always take my self and my music to the next level. So look out for me soon on MTV.
I truly thank everyone who has believed in me and helped me get to where I am now, and hopefully will still be with me through the many stages of my career.
And as for the doubters and people who said I couldn’t do it- enjoy my success I know I am.
Peace
