Dj Q has always had a long time passion for music, especially dance music, dropping his signature freestyle and trance sounds. According to him, it all started at a young age. “When I was 13, I heard Crystal Waters ‘Gypsy Woman’ and I couldn’t stop playing it! I loved it! From that point, I knew I wanted to become a Dj and get more involved in dance music.†So Dj Q started making mixed dance tapes in high school for his friends for a quick buck, and he made ‘good money’ so he says. He also got involved in the high school band, learning what he can about the basics of music. “Knowledge is power, and I wanted to take that to college and see what I can do with it.†Good thing he did. He entered Michigan State University and immediately enrolled in the choir, while secretly trying to get a foot in the door with the college radio station. He got more than one foot in, as 88.9fm, “The Impact†gave him an internship learning how to spin and scratch on the ‘Underground,’ a late Saturday night hip-hop show. “I was so happy I had a chance to work with the crew even though I would come home after work at 3am tired sometimes, but that was probably the point that really propelled my career on the Dj scene, hoping to turn what I know into spinning dance music.†He never told his friends, not even his girlfriend at the time! “I didn’t want to jinx anything! And people would have seen what I was doing as a ‘joke’ wanting to spin dance music, since hip-hop was huge back then and still is, and dance wasn’t, so I just kept my mouth shut and I just did my thing.†Hard work paid off, as Dj Q graduated from Michigan State, and got a job working for Power 96.5 fm WQHH-FM in Lansing, Michigan as an on-air personality and mobile House Dj at the clubs here and there on Saturday nights. “That was fun, owning the airwaves in the radio station and hitting the clubs off campus and watching people dance to what you’re playing. It was a good feeling.†While employed at WQHH, he met the musical artist Brandy in Detroit promoting her new album, ‘Full Moon.’ “It was a celebration of her album, and I was happy to be chosen to celebrate it with her and a few select people.†Dj Q says. “I had a chance to sit down and talk with her and her career, and told Brandy that I'm a on air personality and I spin dance music. 'Maybe one day I could help make a dance mix for one your songs in the future.’ But in my mind I knew I didn’t have a shot.†Was he ever wrong! Brandy told him whenever you’re in Los Angeles, look up my producers and see what ‘magic’ you can produce. After being fully experienced as a Dj, Q left WQHH after 3 years to head to Los Angeles, and yes, he did help put together a separate dance mix for Brandy’s song “Talk About our Love†off her ‘Aphrodisiac’ album, and helping produce dance mixes for a few other musical artists, while spinning at local clubs in Hollywood and Downtown LA. Afterwards, he moved to Atlanta, and spun at the famous hangout “The Underground.†Q is taking time off to make his own music and to give help and advice to people who want to become involved in dance music. “I’m not retiring, I’m just taking a break, making my music. I still spin here and there and hit the clubs, seeing my girl Dj MLE do her thing in Denver. We go back a few years, and I'm so proud of her, but I’m content with where I'm at right now. I don’t care if I become a big household name, I just love what I do, and that’s all that matters to me.†It is clear that Dj Q has claimed not only a permanent spot behind the decks, but hopefully happiness in the hearts of people he has performed for... 1Club.FM : 93..1 The Beat (Miami) Add one of our streams to your MySpace!
