MY BABY
A LITTLE UNDERSTANDING .... I have such an eclectic taste that to list all that I love would take forever so I'll just make mention of the very important. RADIOHEAD, JEFF BUCKLEY, DAMIEN RICE, THE FRAMES, DAVID BOWIE,, NICK CAVE, BJORK, BILLIE HOLIDAY, TORI AMOS, MASSIVE ATTACK, MUSE, U2, NINA SIMONE, PJ HARVEY, FOO FIGHTERS, NIRVANA, BLUR, PRIMAL SCREAM, UNKLE, THE FLAMING LIPS, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN (AH,GETTING LONG SO I'LL SKIP TO SCOTTISH TALENT) BELLE AND SEBASTIAN, IDLEWILD, PAOLO NUTINI, ARAB STRAP, KT TUNSTALL. Think I'll leave it there for now. BOTTOM SHELF...
I have so many cinematic hero's and influences. I like to draw on all types of material. I go through phases...Scorsese phase, Kurosawa phase, Woody Allen phase, Jean-Luc Godard phase, Kubrick phase....right now I think I may move into a Tarantino phase, I have an urge. Here are a few overall movie choices that are a must...TRUE ROMANCE, PULP FICTION, WITHNAIL & I, THE GODFATHER TRILOGY, SCARFACE, BLADE RUNNER, RAGING BULL, A BOUT DE SOUFFLE, VIVRE SA VIE, ON THE WATERFRONT, BONNIE & CLYDE, RORY O'SHEA WAS HERE (AKA INSIDE I'M DANCING), LA FEMME NIKITA, PAPER MOON, FULL METAL JACKET, EDUCATING RITA, MY NAME IS JOE, SMALL FACES, ORPHANS, THE STEAMIE and when I'm in an eighties mood...THE BREAKFAST CLUB, FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF, ST. ELMO'S FIRE & NATIONAL LAMPOON'S CHRISTMAS VACATION. Childhood favourites include THE LABYRINTH & THE NEVERENDING STORY. JAMES DEAN can do no wrong and if I include musical favourites then I must say, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, HIGH SOCIETY & ON THE TOWN...OH & THE WIZARD OF OZ (cause there truly is no place like home). Beyond that, there is an array of other pieces of cinematic genius that would keep me writing all day but I must make mention of Akira Kurosawa's SEVEN SAMURAI and more recently appreciated Yimou Zhang's CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER, as well as, Darren Aronofsky's THE FOUNTAIN & THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, Kevin Macdonald, dir. ONCE, written and directed by former bass guitarist of The Frames, John Carney
CURRENTLY READING - Factotum by Charles Bukowski. I actually have a terrible habit of starting books and never reaching the end. There are those little exceptions that hold my attention which include, The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach (thanks Mr. Grumpy),Eleven Minutes,The Alchemist & Veronika Decides To Die by Paulo Coelho,The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov,Acting: The First Six Lessons by Richard Boleslavsky,Face to Face by Ingmar Bergman,Anything by Philip K. Dick,Plays by Sam Shepard (especially Fool for Love and Cowboy Mouth), Tennessee Williams (Talk To Me Like The Rain is pure poetry), John Patrick Shanley and Liz Lochhead,Poetry by Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes, Fernando Pessoa and Charles Bukowski. The inner workings of the mind of Leonard Cohen please me and Bob Dylan is just a great lyricist.
