The history of Devils Island goes back about early-2002, when three friends had first come upon thoughts of forming an old-school metal band. These three founding members were: Georgi Haralanov (vocals), Alex Treyer (guitars), and Ivan Martynovich (former guitarist). All with prior ambitions but no experience, started writing songs and practicing in various basements and apartments across NYC shortly after they became acquainted. The trio adopted the name Devils Island a result of Alex's fascination with punitive measures of the old world.
January 2003 marks the official birth of Devils Island when bassist Serjey Deych and drummer Anthony DiSPigna join the fold. In August of 2003 Ivan was replaced by Dmitry Kitaygorodsky due to his move to Maine. Anthony DiSpigna left the band to join the force in January of 2006. Since then, Daniel Kurfirst (Scribes of Fire, Stoneman, Invidia, Carpediemenvy) and Jaimen Shinn (Damon Morder, Catalyst Of Thought) have kept the band alive by manning the kit. Today, Brandon Hodges (Euphoria, Noir, Pandah) claims the throne. To date, the band has played a number of prominent venues all over NYC, opened for national acts, and has crossed the USA on a self organized tour effort. Always looking to make its next show better, bigger, and louder than the last.
In early 2004, Devils Island channeled its live energy into a 4-track demo recorded at W.Y.H. studios in Brooklyn. With a solid song-base, and the ever-increasing live experience this young energetic band is on its way to make an impact on the local metal scene, as well as to eventually go beyond New York Citys borders and then the world. The band is hungry for every and any spot to play, because after all the live experience was their main goal for forming the band. The four years of its existence are just the beginning of this constantly evolving five-piece, which plays real metal without pretense and is willing to go wherever the music takes it.
Notable shows played: opening for the King Diamond, Entombed, Nocturne, Single Bullet Theory tour (Fall, 2003); Symphony X (Winter, 2003); George Lynch, formerly of Dokken (Fall, 2004); Nuclear Assault (Summer, 2005); Cellador (Summer, 2006); The Brooklyn Metalfest (Summer, 2006); Testament (Fall, 2006); Twisted Sister (Winter, 2006); DI's very own US tour in the Winter of '06/'07, and the band's "Dillons" line of events.
The band has recorded a new EP entitled Coma Dreams. Samples and artwork are up. The CD will be available for sale shortly and a Record Release Show is in the works. Participation in Brooklyn Metalfest II is scheduled for June 23.
