A percussionist for almost thirty years, a professional DJfor 20, a pedicab driver, a traveler, a solar panelingowner, a loving husband.I was drawn to Afro-Cuban rhythms by my late teens andbegan studying congas, bongos and timbales. That led torecordings with two bands and tours in Europe and Japan.In 1986, I became the resident DJ of SOBs (Sounds ofBrazil), in New York City. There I was able toparticipate in many memorable events, including shows byMachito, Mario Bauza, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Cachao,Hector Lavoe (guest appearance), Marc Anthony (early inhis career), Grupo Niche, Oscar D'Leon, Munequitos deMatanzas, and Los Papines. I also had the honor of DJingat the tributes of two Latin legends after they passedaway: Tito Puente and Celia Cruz. I quitted SOB's in 2005.Most recently, I DJ'd at the Copacabana; at events byHavanaRumba.net, at events by Spiceevents.com, at Plan Bon wednesdays, at Paladar on saturdays, at Baraza, at APT,at Rose Live music in Brooklyn, at Sutra Lounge, at LeSouk, at Lafayette bar and grill, at Lincoln Center'sMidsummer Night Swing festival featuring the SpanishHarlem Orchestra, upon which 2,000 Latin music lovers anddancers converged; and, at Spiegel Tent, where sailboatscruise past dancers on their way to New York Harbor.As for the future of salsa, I think back to my responsewhen people used to tell me that Tito Puente's death meantthe end of salsa, to which I would reply: "I think not!"
