All that is gold does not glitter

About Me

I'm in Tanzania, teaching math and physics at a boys boarding school in the Crater Highlands. My area is stunningly beatiful. I spoke with a driver who's taken tourists through all of Tanzania's national parks, and he says the one I'm living right next to is the best. It's been described as the 8th wonder of the world.I don't like to ask for things, because I value that which is freely given so much more. While I'm out of the country, I'll be blogging here, but email is probably a better way to reach me. NoBeardPete (at) gmail (dot) com.

My Interests

I like coffee, beer, and whiskey. I like smoking cigars on my porch and reading. I like getting so caught up in a conversation while walking around that I completely loose track of where I am going. I love Philadelphia, it's the greatest city on earth.

I'd like to meet:

People who don't live for an audience. Someone who will keep me company while I'm cooking. Cute ladies to salsa with here in Tanzania. Actually, anyone who will come visit me in Tanzania. Also, if you could be persuaded to teach me to sail, we need to talk.

Movies:

Instead of movies, I'm using this space for quotes.A man is rich in proportion to the number of things which he can afford to let alone. - ThoreauIf you have lost the ability to respond to what makes other people giddy and silly, are you the stronger for ít or the weaker? - Gregory Maguire

Books:

I inherited a pretty big book collection which was already in my house when I moved in. Right now I'm reading a collection of Dofstoevsky's short stories, which are cool. I've recently also read some Roald Dahl, Kerouac, and De Touqeville.I'm also slowly making my way through "Mfalme Juha", which seems to be a play pitched towards children with some sort of moral about the dangers of a centrally controlled economy. It was the book written in Swahili that looked the most advanced and the least like it was about to disintegrate into paper pulp at the bookstore in my town.

Heroes:

Edward Bushnell, and those few subjects who told Milgram to fuck off. Any man can step up to the plate once he sees that he should, what's hard is to have the presence of mind to recognize the opportunity. Also the man who invented cheese, Hank Scorpio, and GC Rota.

So I've safely made it to Tanzania.  I'll probably be on MySpace only very infrequently for some time, so I advise everyone to communicate with me by email.  NoBeardPete at gmail....

I think this may be a commentary on the state of political discourse today

Last Monday I slept in a bit late.  Decided that instead of throwing on clothes and sprinting out the door, I'd actually take a shower, get ready in my normal fashion, and then drive to wo...

Flag burning amendment dies in the Senate

Every year or two, the House of Representatives passes a bill that'd start the process to amend the constitution to allow flag burning to be banned.  The Senate, being not quite the den of...

Ordering beer

Last weekend my friend Jose finally came up to visit me.  I'd been on him for years, "When are you coming to visit me in Philly?"  "Why don't you come up for a visit?" etc etc.  ...

Ma bécane est mort. Vive ma bécane!

Friday just over a week ago, I killed my bike.  She was a mid 70's Peugeot, probably a 1975 PX10, although I'm not entirely sure of the year, and it's possible she was a variant of the PX1...

In memoriam

Friday night, my bike was fatally wounded.  I did not realize it at the time, I thought she'd taken a serious, but remediable, injury.  It wasn't until this morning, at the bike shop ...
