[Lackey] Coach Scott Chadwick was torn when junior Bryan Gibbons nudged him along the sideline in the fourth quarter of the Chargers' Maryland 3A South Region semifinal against McDonough. With the fifth- ranked Chargers' offense struggling in a tie game, Gibbons told Chadwick to throw him the ball. So, on first down from the McDonough 19-yard line with 58 seconds to play, the 6-foot, 185-pound fullback-linebacker persuaded Chadwick to have quarterback Aaron Smith run a play-action fake. Gibbons streaked to the right corner of the end zone, and Smith found him on a perfect timing pass for the game's lone touchdown, which gave Lackey a 10-3 victory. This play wasn't in Lackey's playbook. Gibbons loves to needle Chadwick about trying different plays. And although many of Gibbons's ideas intrigue Chadwick, just as many don't.

That time ended for Walton on Saturday with Lackey's 26-6 loss at Gwynn Park in the Maryland 3A South Region final, a title the Chargers held the past two seasons. [Lackey] seniors [Walton], Greg Bowman, Bryan Gibbons, Dante Page and Aaron Smith are the last players to be a part of the Chargers teams that made 3A title game appearances in 2003 and '04, seasons that revitalized the program. This season, Lackey proved its success was a credit to the program and not just a handful of players from the previous two seasons. And when the Chargers started the season 2-2, including a homecoming loss to Chopticon, it did not look promising.Last weekend at Gwynn Park, Lackey looked and sounded old. The Chargers were banged up, most notably Gibbons, a co-captain, who dislocated his elbow on Lackey's fourth offensive play against Friendly in the region semifinal Nov. 18. Not only was Gibbons Lackey's best defensive player, but he was the team's fullback, long snapper and, as Coach Scott Chadwick said, "our best playoff player," given his brilliance in last year's postseason.
