After performing in separate projects the members of City in Ruins paths crossed whilst gigging with each others bands
Neil, Tom and Kinley from Blacktop Fridays , Rob from Rogue Faction and Benn from Etiquette.
Finding that they got on very well with each other and all had a similar idea in mind for the sort of music that they wanted to make they decided to start a musical project together the idea was a ridiculously heavy band verging on death metal whilst fusing it with the hooks and melody of pop music, once agreed Tom, Neil, Rob, Kinley and Ben met up in June 2005 and had a jam.
Having literally wrote "They're coming for you Barbara" in their first practice they realised this was something that they wanted to pursue so continued practicing relentlessly...at this point the band was still unnamed although a few ideas were floating around such as "Kill the Hero" & "Save Maria" amongst others.
The band continued writing music and getting closer as friends then at one practice Neil announced he wanted to use the band name "City in Ruins" the rest of the band agreed and the band then had an identity.
December 2005 came and the band stepped into the 18 wheeler studio to record their debut E.P to be released at their debut gig on January 31st supporting Ferris, the band cut a 3 track cd consisting of:
1.They're coming for you Barbara
2.This is no place for Heroes
3.Save Maria
The cd was recorded effortlessly and very quickly but the mixing was the lengthy part, unfortunately only "Barbara" was mixed and ready for release 2 weeks before the gig and was put up onto the bands myspace, in that fortnight the band received some amazing reactions to the song that they never thought they would get people really seemed to appreciate and be excitied by what the band was doing, very excited by the reception the song had recieved the band were even more geared for the gig that was getting closer.
On the run in to the gig the band practiced when ever they were able to whilst also spending as much time in the studio finishing up the mixes on the songs.
January 31st came and on the night the band was very excited to show everyone what they had been working on the audience was bigger than what they or the venue had expected and the fact the venue was only small added to the atmosphere.
The band stepped up and opened with their punishing track "stencils of stabwounds" after the minute long song finished the cheers were enough to let the band know that people really did like what they heard so they continued...unfortunately the band didnt have any back up equipment and with the bands very energetic stage show Robs guitar decided it had enough and completely died, unphased rob threw the guitar down and grabbed the mic and Ben took it on himself to be the only guitarist for the rest of the night.
Soon the set was over and the band got a much greater reaction than what they had expected and were overwhelmed at the applause and cheers. Then in the following year and a half worth of gigging up and down the country, the band shared stages with the following incredible bands: Penknife Lovelife, My Mind's Weapon, Enter Shikari, Flood Of Red, From The Carnival Of Horrors, Centurion, Bring Me The Horizon, Bound By Blood, Beyond All Reason, Have A Go Hero, Deadweight, The Hollow Earth Theory, Azriel, Eternal Lord, Forever Ends Today, and many more...
Tom decided that the direction City in Ruins was going in was no longer for him and left the band to pursue another musical career, the band was sad to see him go but if his heart wasn't in it then it was best all around.
Shortly after Tom left the band once again stepped back into the studio with Rob doing guitars/vocals and electronics, the studio this time was Priory studios to record another 2 songs
The boy who lost his Face and He aint gettin' back up.
In 2007 different priorities had to take charge in the bands life and they decided to go on an extended break to focus on other elements of their lives, the band booked their Farewell show where it all began as part of the "Reach out and F@ck somebody" gigs on 02/04/07 with support from their close friends "Pilot the Skies" many friendly familiar faces showed up to the gig to bid farewell as did many new ones and the band felt very humbled by the farewell applause they received as they stepped away from the stage
we want to thank anyone who came to our shows and listened to our songs, any band that we have played with and got on well with, every moment was amazing.
thankyou
