BIOGRAPHY: Grenadian DJ and Performer King Ilabash named New England’s Dancehall King, knew music was going to be his life from the age of 10. This DJ, host, and artist began his music career in 1990 playing at college parties and has blessed over 350 schools with his presence over the past seventeen years. He was first introduced to the club scene in 1995 at a Boston Sound Clash, where King Ilabash was the winner out of 25 DJs. Since then he has worked in over 50 clubs all over New England.
On top of DJing at college parties, house parties, and clubs King Ilabash has also worked on local radio stations including the Caribbean radio station, Choice 102.9fm, appeared as a guest DJ on 88.9fm as well as the Northeastern University radio station. After his growing success and high demand, King Ilabash released his first mix CD in 2002 and has since released six CDs.
King Ilabash not only brings the hottest dancehall, soca, calypso, and hip hop tunes to a party but can also knock any host out of the water with his entertaining presence and captivating voice keeping everyone on the dance floor. “Whenever, wherever, however… King Ilabash will deliver†King Ilabash, born Joseph Nigel Cooper, knew music was going to be his life from the age of 10 while growing up in Grenada in the West Indies. Ilabash began his music career in 1990 as a DJ, playing at college parties and have blessed over 350 schools with his presence over the past seventeen years. King Ilabash was first introduced to the club scene in 1995 at a Boston Sound Clash, where King Ilabash was the winner out of 25 DJs. Since then he has worked in over 50 clubs all over New England. King Ilabash captures the masses by combining his DJ skills with his lyrical talent and keeps then coming back. In 2002, Ilabash has taken his contribution to the music industry to another level. Ilabash formed and currently runs King Ilabash Productions, a label that comprises of DJ’ing, sound equipment rental, promotions, and most recently, live music entertainment.Ilabash formed The Generations Band, a Reggae band that first comprises of himself as lead vocalist. Keyboardist Simon Lee is disciplined in various performance styles such as Classical, Jazz, Latin, Pop, Traditional Chinese and Traditional Malay. He is also a music instructor teaching Piano, Synthesizers, and Music Theory-Pop, Jazz & Classical. Guitarist, Yi Choi is the experienced of the band, having 17 years experience in Piano, 15 years in vocals and, 11 years in guitar. Choi has played in 4 bands (2 currently) and published a Guitar instruction DVD titled “Essentials of Guitar Playingâ€. Drummer, Alejandro Bass player John Rappaport has been playing from since the age of 12. A major milestone for this California native was playing for Geffen recording artist Trevor Hall during his tour in summer of 2004. All band members are students at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Their repertoire is mainly that of Dancehall and Lovers’ Rock with influences by performers such as Bob Marley and Buju Banton. An asset to the band is the multiple cultural backgrounds in the group, spanning from The United States, Malaysia, Costa Rica, Taiwan, and Grenada.King Ilabash and the Generations Band have performed at Northeastern University, Brandeis University, Tufts University, and The West Indian Festival in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They are currently performing at Threeways Nightclub in Portland, Maine every Sunday night as well as working on their first album.
It is only a matter of time until the world recognizes and is moved by this Caribbean phenomenon.
