Χαλεπὰ τὰ καλά

About Me

Work hard, play harder. Care about someTHING larger than yourself, care about someONE other than yourself. Speak from the heart but never intend to cause pain. Learn all you can. Be kind. Keep your word at all costs. Be fearless not because you have nothing to loose, but because you are aware of what you have to gain. Do not be careless with other people's hearts, and do not put up with those who are careless with yours. Do nothing half-assed. Be able to hold two conflicting thoughts in your head and continue to function. Don't get in the way of your own happiness. Understand that those who tell you "no" might not be smart enough to tell you "yes". Don't lie. Respect knowledge, seek wisdom, and never confuse the two. Pick your team and play for it. There's nothing wrong with high expectations. Try not to yell at people, but don't be afraid to if they damn well deserve it. Invest in others. Realize that if all the world's a stage, then you should call your own cues.

Books:

So the cop-out here is to say all of them, which to say you like everything is to say that you like nothing at all. But I have to admit I have at least LEARNED from the books I thought were shitty. Oh, and confession time: I have a penchant for British literature (Go read the Lonely Londoners). I'm down with romanitcism (go team Poe) I like Victorian lit, I adore Austen (what can I say, estrogen corrupts the mind) I like contemporary medical fiction, I'll pick up science fiction no questions asked, oh and fuck Kerouac. And double fuck 94% of young adult literature, it was the worst class I ever took. Make our children read real books! Here's the short list of the all-time faves: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Virgin Suicides, Stiff, My Antonia, Pride & Prejudice, Howard's End, Sex Drugs & Cocoa Puffs, Middlesex, Water for Elephants, Spook, All Creatures Great & Small (whole series), and anything Kate Chopin wrote in her whole damn life, period. The end. She is the queen of regional fiction.P.S. Here are books that as an English major I'm ashamed I haven't read: Moby Dick, Catcher in the Rye, A Tale of Two Cities, War & Peace, and a few others. Hey, you can't read 'em all.Currently reading: Rroust & the Squid, Maryanne Wolf

Heroes:

Those willing to draw a firm line in the sand when needed, but love like it's going out of style.

Lipstick

This is the first essay I ever wrote in college.  I kept it and I periodically pick it up and edit it and add to it.  The meat and potatoes of it however, have not changed.  A professor...
