According to information passed down, and bits recorded in the Book of Nod, our beginnings were with Caine, the first murderer. Caine slew his brother and for his crime, he was cursed by God...transformed into a vampire.
Caine wandered the lands of Nod for many years, not wanting to curse the world with others of his kind. Finally, his loneliness won out and he went to the city of Enoch. He created/embraced three: Zillah the Beautiful, Enoch the Wise, and Irad the Strong. They were the second generation of Vampires and they, in turn, created the third generation (Antediluvians)...the founders of the Thirteen Clans.
These second and third generations sought Caine's attention and used mortals recklessly. Caine was angered by their behavior, and when he had a vision of the Great Flood, he left and went into hiding, hoping that the flood would end these progeny.
The second and third generations survived, however. Still jealous of each other, the third generation rose up and slew their sires. Afterwards, they built the Second City and ruled men openly.
The proud Children of Caine walked among the mortals and feared no one. We lorded over the humans and they were our pawns to do with as we willed. Our numbers were greatly increased and we spread ourselves throughout the world. We took whatever we wanted and did whatever we chose to do.
In our arrogance, we neglected to realize that we were not all-powerful. Some humans' fear ran deep and they banned together with the blessings of the Church. The mortals were vengeful and rose against their overlords with a frightful passion. Their swarming masses overtook even the most powerful vampire.
Our populace diminished dramatically during the Inquisition. We were burned in their bonfires or tortured to dust by the humans who ripped us from our beds and flung us into the sunlight. We were forced to hide and become invisible to the world of man in order to survive.
Seven of the Thirteen clans met and agreed to exist behind the great Masquerade, as we named it. We became nothing more than a myth to the mortals. Knowledge of our presence faded into the realm of nightmares and legends.
