Even though ascending from the same suburban hellhole as the infamous Norwegian black metallers Mayhem, and inventing their own genre of Black Indie, The Unmist shares little else with their metal contemporaries than the fascination of the mystique of the woods. Preoccupied with everything from classic American cars to horror movie soundtracks, The Unmist made the sound of mood swinging melancholy a well known trademark of what certainly has become one of Norway’s leading post rock orchestras.
After being picked up by the Norwegian indie/electronica label Smalltown Supersound, their debut album "28:59 Long Play" saw its release late 1998, and is still a sought after underground classic.
Early 2003 their second full-lenght "Ryne Speaks" finally
saw the day of light on the underground label Bubblesound to a massive applause from the media, maintaining their position as one of Norway’s most exciting bands around. From soothing and quiet to explosive and violent, "Ryne Speaks" challenges every listener in a new way. The melancholy of the debut is still present, but evolves further with a fresh and earnest approach to modern alternative music.
Live they have appeared alongside bands like Mogwai, ...Trail Of Dead, and Quickspace amongst others.
Today, The Unmist are on a undefined hiatus. The members are currently in Norwegian indie acts Serena Maneesh, Le Corbeau , Arms On Fire and Infidels Forever.
Who knows, you might not seen the end of The Unmist just yet. We’ll see.
In the meantime, enjoy this clip of drunken joy recorded at Heiafestivalen, Seljord, Norway in the summer of 2003. The sound is pretty bad. It’s rock music you know. It’s supposed to be loud, fuckers.
