First...MUSIC! My CD collection of ~1000 attests to it. Really into blues and do a blues show on local radio in New Orleans...tune 90.7fm locally, or listen to streaming broadcast on http://www.wwoz.org. Current show UPDATE: I am now subbing whenever possible on evening blues shows. I broadcast a myspace bulletin to my friends each time I'm scheduled. OZ is listener-supported and can always use your help, but right now the Fall Fund Drive is on. Please call and pledge or click this link
then click on "Pledge Now."///Second. I enjoy wines - including tasting opportunities, food pairings (I'm a latent sommelier), and the study of enology. I collect what I can (or should I say, what I can afford), but it's the tasting and understanding subtle nuances that provide the most pleasure. ///Funny thing, I also like to scope out the best craft-brewed beers and ales. No Bud for me, thanks. Favorite are from Abita Brewing Co. (www.abita.com), a local LA brew that is now enjoying increased U.S. distribution (try the Turbodog in bottles and AndyGator on draught); Lazy Magnolia Brewing Co. (www.lazymagnolia.com), but I have to get it just across the state line in MS (try the Southern Pecan); and Goose Island Beer Co. (www.gooseisland.com), a great Chicago brewery that is not distributed in LA but I get to enjoy because my daughter works there (try their premium Matilda or Nut Brown Ale). For a great draught locally, you'll usually find me at The Bulldog (www.draftfreak.com).///Third. I JUST LOVE NEW ORLEANS!! More than two years after Katrina, we still have much to do. But, for visitors, you'll mostly find it better than your last visit. The French Quarter and tourist areas are much cleaner; the restaurants have come back even stronger and in greater number; new entertainment venues and corridors (especially along Frenchmen St.) are more developed; and most attractions are back open for business. Crime is admittedly still a problem, but not typically where visitors frequent. We're worth a trip! I hope you'll make plans to come down soon! If you have a question about ANYTHING New Orleans (clubs, restaurants, attractions, you name it), just ask!
Well, it was thanks to my son Dan (on this site as [)äÑmÄñ) that I am on here. Mostly this provides a good way to stay in touch with him and daughter Stacia (Peachy), but also thought it would be a great site to create a profile with lots of content where those searching on terms like winetasting, New Orleans, blues, etc. would find someone like-minded to chat with on those subjects of interest to me.
As previously noted, blues is my business (and business is good). Tab Benoit is a favorite artist and I have one of his songs linked on this profile. One of his other songs (written by and performed with Cyril Neville)..."Plareen Man"...is where the MySpace handle originates (you can hear it on his Sea Saint Sessions album) after being identified with that song by a girlfriend. I also pride myself on ever-expanding my listening and embracing all music styles. Recently heard Lauren Barrett (www.myspace.com/laurenbarrett) for the first time at Louisiana Music Factory (www.louisianamusicfactory.com) and think you should check her out!
OK, for those of you watching "K-Ville" to get a glimse of life in New Orleans...I could pick it apart as not appropriately (or positively) depicting reality. We appreciate that it's bringing attention to our continuing post-K plight, but I don't appreciate the liberties that it takes in its portrayal and have to suspend belief to find any enjoyment at all. Still enjoying Dexter and Weeds. I have to see where Heroes goes from here. Californication is new and great. I am watching Next Iron Chef in hopes that Chef John Besh wins and tune in to other food and wine related shows. Oh, and Dancing with the Stars, too. The DVR gets a workout.
