Highvoltage ****
Credible French rock bands dont immediately come to mind. Electronic boffins maybe, but 13th Hole are out to change all that. A cult group in America and Japan, the five piece also recorded a session for the late John Peel. Bringing together the sounds of 60s noise-legends The Sonics and NYC garage-punk, 13th Hole create quite a racket. On top of that are the powerful-yet-bittersweet vocals of Italian singer Isa; her arrival in the group lead to a streamlining of their experimental past into what the band call quirky pop ballads. Of the songs, A side Bus Stop has a languid groove and plenty of Sonic Youth distortion, while Mars sounds like The Pixies beating the shit out of The Velvet Underground. Noise hasnt sounded this wonderful for years.
Angryape [Victoria McNaught-Davis]
One of only two bands of the same origin to have ever done a John Peel session, 13th Hole are a female-led Franco-Italian band. Singing in a slightly American accented English their new single Bus Stop Mars is a sexy kind of edgy. As with the alternate vocal pitches, heavy guitars compliment some light drums. Overall, the single has a distinctly heavy yet euphoric feel to it that evokes that great feeling of escape, and thus they fulfil their aim of appealing to outsiders. More grunge than indie, they refreshingly shake off the European tack that sticks to the majority of bands coming out of Europe (Brits included), and do so well before the single is finished. It is difficult to judge a band on the basis of one single, but these odd balls should be looking forward to a very happy new year once they've found their feet.
