The Ingredients sound is one that is not easily defined. The term indie rock gets thrown around quite a bit, but it doesn't really do the band justice. Drawing on a vast array of influences and inspirations, Ingredients has created a sound that is both eclectic and unique, yet very accessible. In the words of Serena Markstrom of The Register Guard, "This is what indie pop is supposed to be." Their 2006 release, Bears Driving Trains, with cover art by comic book artist Mike Allred (Madman, Chasing Amy), was received with both critical and popular acclaim. Adrienne Vandervalk of Eugene Weekly writes, "Ingredients reminds you of no particular band except all the ones you really like." Eugene Weekly readers agree, voting Ingredients Best Local Rock Band in their Best of Eugene awards for 2006 and 2007. On their latest release, Cold Blooded, Warm Breaded (2007), Ingredients shows further refinement of their sound, with more diverse instrumentation and recording techniques that make every song stand out. The band manages to cover a wide range of genres on this album, from disco on "Groovy Groovy Man", to circus music on "Freaks on Parade" (which features Tom Heinl on trombone and saw), without departing from their own distinctive style. They describe this collection of songs as "psychedelic/weird pop rock with a heavy chameleon influence, an imaginative concept record that depicts the highs and the lows of human emotions, using the medium of sonic explosions and poetic imagery." But the appeal of Ingredients is not limited to their recordings, or even their music, for that matter. The band has also produced two films: The Ingredients the Band the Movie (which played to a packed house four nights in a row at the Bijou Art Cinema in Eugene), as well as a short mockumentary in the style of VH1's Behind the Music series. Both films have filled the room with hysterical, almost riotous laughter at every showing. On top of their albums and their films, Ingredients is renowned for their exciting, energetic, and fun-filled live performances - throwing Emergen-C and Magic Black Snakes to the crowd, jumping off the walls, and running out into the audience like maniacs, while still delivering a top-notch musical performance. Anyone who has been to an Ingredients show, enveloped in a rabid pack of sweaty Ingredients fans, knows that the band makes quite a spectacle of themselves on stage. With such a multitude of captivating facets, Ingredients is clearly not just another band. They possess many qualities which are rare in today's music industry: artistic integrity without pretense, an intuitive ability to connect with their audience, and an eclectic mix of truly original music.
