Tapes Found In Box And Baked In Oven For 24Hours!

About Me

From the mid seventies James was usually a solo performer playing and preaching in schools, youth clubs, coffee bars and various events. He occasionally teamed up with Andy Delves (Bass and 12 String Guitar), for folk clubs or other events. James has played at The Greenbelt Festival (Castle Ashbey and Deene Park) and has performed at various events in the UK and Holland with writer and broadcaster Adrian Plass. Adrian and James wrote the musical 'David' based on episodes in the life of David the King from the Bible, which was performed to sell out audiences at the Tivoli Theatre, Eastbourne. James still writes music but he rarely performs these days concentrating instead on visual art with one man shows in Eastbourne and Oxford, and with other artists in the Brighton Festival. In 2002 he was awarded the Alan Davie prize for painting. His work has been published in Germany and in the UK by HarperCollins and Kingsway among others.

ScribbleTalk recorded these pieces in 1986 at the Circle of Fifths Studio in Willingdon. Gerry Page engineered and produced the recordings. He also played Bass and Keyboards and cleverly programmed the very limited drum machine that came with the cheap Yamaha keyboard. James Hammond (whose songs and instrumentals these are) played all other instruments and did the vocals. The recordings were made in the old fashioned way on a four-track cassette machine with ludicrous amounts of mixing down to make way for more overdubs. The material was intended for circulation to family and friends and were thought lost but James found the Revox quarter inch back up to the master tapes in a box a few months ago. The tapes were baked in an oven to bring them back to a usable state and brightened up at ICC Studio's in Eastbourne. A selection of the original songs/instrumentals is offered here for your listening pleasure . . . James still plays occasionally but mostly works in the visual arts . . . Gerry teaches music and leads the very popular Life Gospel Choir in Eastbourne . . .
