The Canadian author wrote it at the age of 32 under the influence of amphetamines. But it was the hoboes of the thirties who carried the myth of the beautiful loser out into the world. They where vagabonds travelling across the United States as stowaways on freight trains, something that inspired the beat generation years later. The idol of all losers is Stagger Lee, who became a legendary black hero after murdering his partner over a game of chance in 1895. He was the embodiment of the beautiful loser and the source of inspiration for hundreds of songs. His Restless soul haunts the sound of many musicians, like Ike turner or Sly Stone. ‘Beautiful Losers’ are rebels, who have turned their weaknesses into strengths, don’t think about tomorrow and do everything necessary to be counterproductive. Whether punk or surf bum, losing is a lifestyle. But beware: sometimes this lifestyle can make you very successful – and most of all beautiful.Beautiful losers 2006
